NEW YORK - There have been so many words applied to Joe Namath through the years - icon, matinee idol, living legend, to name just a few. But 38 years ago, Namath's own description of himself was one you've probably never heard.

Dork.

Namath showed up in full uniform, complete with helmet, to shoot a magazine cover in Times Square when he was a raw AFL rookie in 1965. The theatergoers passing by gawked at the young quarterback from Beaver Falls, Pa., by way of the University of Alabama...

NEW YORK - Joe Namath enjoys watching Chad Pennington play, and he likes the young Jets quarterback's attitude and enthusiasm. Except for one thing.

"I don't like him butting helmets with the [offensive] linemen," Namath said Wednesday at a news conference in which the Hall of Fame quarterback was introduced as the Jets' Ambassador-at-large.

But other than that bit of youthful overexuberance, No. 12 is impressed by what he has seen from No. 10. Both physically and mentally....

NFL punishes Evans for third substance-abuse violation
NEW YORK (AP) -- New York Jets defensive tackle Josh Evans was suspended indefinitely Friday by the NFL for violating its substance-abuse policy for a third time.

Evans was suspended twice by the league for violating the policy during six seasons with the Tennessee Titans. He missed the first four games in 1999 and was suspended for the entire 2000 season.

Under the terms of the program, players who violate the substance-abuse policy after a one-year suspension are out indefinitely. Evans' reinstatement will be determined by commissioner Paul Tagliabue in consultation with medical experts....

A shocked Josh Evans was handed an indefinite suspension by the NFL yesterday, a decision that puts even more emphasis on the Jets' slow-moving negotiations with first-round pick Dewayne Robertson.
Evans' appeal of a third violation of the league's substance abuse policy was turned down by the league and it will now be up to commissioner Paul Tagliabue to determine when the veteran defensive tackle can return....

Shooting From the Lip by Mike Lupica
Every time I see anybody from the Jets interviewed about this new stadium they want on the West Side, they're always tremendously excited and fabulously vague about exactly who's going to pay for it, and how.

We're told about how New York sure would need a new stadium if it hosts the 2012 Summer Olympics.

We're told about all the big ideas Jets owner Woody Johnson and Jay Cross, his team president, have about private financing...more (http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/story/96393p-87343c.html)
