So, I need to buy a gift for a friend who likes good scotch.

I want to get him something a little better than, say, Black Label, but not $220 a bottle like Blue Label. He'd probably like a single malt better anyway. I'm thinking something in the $75 range, maybe a 15 or 18 year.

Keep in mind that I'm in VA, which has inflated liquor prices, although I may try to buy it in MD to save some $$ (MD probably averages 15-20% cheaper than VA).

He already has a bottle of Glenfiddich 15 year, so I don't want that one. I'm thinking maybe Glenlivet 15 or 18. I also had a Macallan 12 that I really liked, so I may see if they have a Macallan 15 year. Any other suggestions?

I've heard Glenlivet is one of the best.

John Walker Gold is my favorite of the walker family... I think that goes for like $65

Talisker is a strong, peaty single malt. An acquired taste, but one worth acquiring. Cragganmore and Aberlour are also pretty good.

Of course if he's drinking Scotch and not Irish Whiskey then he's a heathen, because he should be drinking Bushmills 16 year single malt.

I could try to change it up with a good Irish single malt.

well it's a matter of price and selection. We have strange liquor laws in the US that vary greatly by state- it may not be available, and if it is, it may be expensive (especially in Virginia- the regulation isn't as strict in MD).

Agreed, it's worth a go, but there are better single malts out there.

Glenfiddich 18 yr is absolutely amazing. Johnny Walker Green or Gold are also nice.

If you want to go in a different direction, and I do suggest this, go with Jack Daniels Single Barrel Silver Select. Nice taste!
