PITTSBURGH -- Allegheny County Coroner Cyril Wecht says University of Pittsburgh wide receiver Billy Gaines had been drinking alcohol -- enough that he would have been considered legally intoxicated if he were 21 years old -- before he fell from a catwalk in a church and died.

Gaines, 19, died Wednesday at Mercy Hospital of a fractured skull after striking his head on a pew at Saint Anne church in Homestead, south of Pittsburgh.

Wecht says a Gaines had a blood alcohol content of 0.166 percent. The adult legal limit for drunken driving in Pennsylvania for is 0.1 percent.

Gaines, of Maryland, and several friends had attended a cookout at the church. Gaines had been temporarily living there after a fire destroyed his apartment.

Allegheny County police assistant superintendent Jim Morton would not say who furnished the alcohol because the investigation is ongoing.

Meanwhile, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh has removed the Rev. Henry Krawczyk from his duties.
