The Bills haven't had the best luck during their 50-plus year history. But few
franchises have enjoyed their consistent success in running the ball.
In Buffalo's early AFL years, fullback
Cookie Gilchrist was the league's first 1,000-yard rusher and set a record in
1962 with 13 touchdowns scored. In the eighties, Joe Cribbs was one of the
NFL's top young rushers and was voted to three Pro Bowls while with the Bills.
Most recently, the team has gotten strong performances from players like Travis
Henry, Willis McGahee and Marshawn Lynch.
And then somewhere in between, you have a couple other guys...named O.J.
Simpson and Thurman Thomas.

OJ and Thurman had different styles; OJ was more of a slasher

O.J. was definitely the better runner. I'm not sure it's really all that close.

OJ was by far a better running back... Hands of stone however, which allows Thurman in the conversation.

Thurmbo hands down... Complete running back wins it for me...

I'd have to roll with O. J. Simpson.

2000+ yards in 14 games coupled with the fact every opponent knew he WAS the offense and still couldn't stop him. OJ!
More versatile ? Thurm !!! Better pure runner .....OJ .. Most exciting...tough to say. They both could make the big play.

O.J. could go the distance every time he touched the ball and was a human highlight film.

For sheer drama gotta go OJ. That Bronco chase was classic.

My real answer to the original question is OJ. Yeah the whole planet knew he was going right most of the time but for my money he's still the greatest combo of size and speed I've ever seen.

the correct answer is OJ, the only reason thurman would get any votes is because OJ's a murderer and people will tend to factor that in, which they shouldn't if it's just a football question

Right...I'm biased not because what he did, but because I got to enjoy Thurman live, and remember that MVP game against NY.

OJ was not in my era.

Ah, you would've loved O.J.'s game against Detroit on Thanksgiving day back in '76.

Thurman was a very good back who could run and catch the ball. He is one of my favorite Bills.

But OJ was one of the top 5 running backs in NFL history, a true giant of the game.

I think the only people who might rank Thurman higher are too young to have watched OJ in his prime, or are judging him on his problems in later life.

Nothing against Thurman, but I gotta go with OJ here too. For today's game, Thurman's versatility would probably be preferred however. Although Thurman, I'm sure, benefited alot from the fast K-gun offense that kept defenses off balance and tired.

OJ.

Still holds the longest TD run in Bills History, a 94 yard sprint in the WMS mud against the Steelers in 1972.

Imagine him on a team that was even average.

Imagine him on the Super Bowl teams.

He would of ran for 2,000 yds five years in a row.

I grew up in the Thurman Thomas era... Never seen OJ play a single game so I am probably a little biased there. Oh yeah and OJ murdered his wife.

O.J. was the Adrian Peterson of his day, a guy with talent way above and beyond his peers. As a pure runner, he is easily top-5 of all time. Thomas had more of an all-around game, but O.J. was truly an all-time great. He may be a scumbag and sociopath, but he was a rare talent. As much as I liked Thurman, O.J. was a level above him.

as a pure runner OJ

as an overall threat thurman hell thurman might be the best screen and receiving back of all time

add in he could line up as wr he was a matchup nightmare

in fact some will say im a homer thurman was the best all around rb ever marshall faulk can be in the conversation

i never saw barry sander or emmitt play wr they did screens nothing like thurman.

thurman is what made the bills work in the 90's

didn't he lead the league in all purpose yards 5 years in a row it may be 4

Once again, I love Thurman, but...Kelly made the Bills work in the 90s. The no-huddle offense was outstanding and Kelly making his own calls on the fly was a big part of it! Thurman's versatility was a big part of it, but Kelly was the general that led it all. And of course, many other players had strong roles also...

i should have explained that better yes kelly did make the no huddle or kgun go and i think hes a top 20 qb all time hell my name is based on him :)

however it was thurman that helped create all the crazy mismatches hes truly as versatile any rb has ever been in professional football

So whats the Questions? Who would I take as my RB? or Who do I think is Better?

Better: I would go with OJ. He was very fast, elusive, graceful. The much better pure RB. He almost averaged 5ypc, almost.

For the Team: Well it depends on the offense I plan on running. If I am going to play a power running game then for sure OJ. If am going to play to the strengths of today's pass first NFL, then Thurman, plus I know he wont murder anyone and get suspended ...jk

OJ is hands down the greatest player the Buffalo Bills have ever had, too bad he turned into a complete scumbag off the field.

NOT THE DUDE...

2 different types of players but OJ was in a different class. Everyone on the field, in the stadium and watching on tv knew who was getting the ball and still they could not stop him.

In his defense Thurman was great. He was great enough to keep Barry Sanders on the bench at Oklahoma St for 2 years.
