Let's keep it in one thread.

From today's New York Post:

If it's truly going to take an eight- or nine-year front-loaded deal worth between $55-60 million to sign Richards -- Buffalo is believed preparing an offer even larger in scope -- and if Richards is going to need a match to become a Ranger, Sather will hold on to his cash for a later day and another option.

Sounds good.

This one is for the Sabres

Buffalo – With owner Terry Pegula’ unleashing his resources, free agency will be a more pleasant experience for GM Darcy Regier, who lost a number of important players (Henrik Tallinder, Toni Lydman, Chris Drury, Daniel Briere) to the previous owner’s thrifty practices. Regier has spoken with the agents for two of his UFA’s – center Tim Connolly and gritty forward Cody McCormick – but if they can’t reach an agreeable number, they may not be back. And it appears that Mike Grier and Rob Niedermayer won’t return, so there are spots up front to fill. Potential rookies Zack Kassian and Luke Adams will likely get shots in training camp and there are indications that Drury would like to return and he could be a bargain. Some speculate the Sabres will be a player in the Brad Richards hunt, but, failing that, getting a healthy Derek Roy back will be like a signing a major top line free agent for a team that played surprisingly well in his absence. UPDATE: The Sabres have now signed pending UFA defenseman Christian Ehrhoff to a long-term deal after acquiring his rights from the Islanders for a fourth round pick; the Isles had earlier gotten Ehrhoff’s rights from the Canucks for a fourth round pick.

Interesting about Drury. If he is cheap (i.e. 1.5 million or less) and the knee will hold up he can be a #3 guy

If the Sabres land Richards they'll be in the mix of the top 3 teams in the Eastern Conference and will have a legitimate shot at making a run for the Cup.

Not being a Sabres fan it doesn't matter to me if he signs here or not but for all you guys I hope he does.

Some real excitement and a legitimate Cup run would go a long way for the city.

I heard last night about the Sabres 8-10 year front loaded offer. Apparently nobody though Buffalo was going to make that kind of an offer and its made Richards put the brakes on going straight to the Rangers.

Not sure of the Rangers cap situation, can they match that kind of an offer?

But with the 2 defensemen we have just signed, and a couple of good prospects ready to join the big club, I think we're only a first line center away from being in the mix with those teams.

% chance we land Richards? Give me your take.

I'm saying 75%. I think we make the highest bid and it puts the race between us and the Rangers. I leave a 25% chance that Richards takes less money to go to NYC and be with his ex coach. To me that's the only way, I think the teams are pretty equal now talent wise.

"Richards to Buffalo did not seem likely, or plausible to myself and many others UNTIL Mr. Pegula constructed Erhoff's front-loaded contract. 29 other NHL teams stand in awe of Pegula's financial fortitude and sense of urgency to attract and sign the best of the best players. A source told me that Richards places a high premium on a team's goaltending, as he did on Khabibulin in Tampa's Cup winning year in '04. I'm told that Richards holds Hank Lundqvist and Ryan Miller in high regard. Toronto's Reimer has not built a winning resume yet. Leafs will be a long shot. Stay tuned...."

I was thinking about 70-75%. It depends on how big of an issue the coach is. He really liked playing for the Rangers coach. I have a feeling that the big contract to Ehrhoff is definitely helping sway him towards strongly considering the Sabres. And we know that Pegula, his wife and Lindy Ruff will most likely be at his house begging him to come, as of noon today. Plus, Pegula could sell 100,000 snow plows to Arizona. Richards is either gonna end up a Ranger, Sabre or Leaf. It wouldn't surprise me if he mulls the offers from each team and doesn't decide til either later tonight or tomorrow to decide where he's gonna play.

I think all 3 teams have a legitimate shot at him with a slight edge to NY due to his former coach being there. All 3 will give him the money he wants.

The bad part of that is the teams that lose out on him who think they do have a legit shot at bringing him in are not gonna get any FA Center upgrade. And even worse there are no premier centers who are gonna be eligible for FA next season.

Seems to me teams should realize that there are 8-9 suitors for Richards and only one Brad Richards. Even if he chose right away, there will be 7-8 teams left in the dust. Every team should have a plan if they don't happen to sign him (whether or not that plan includes simply sitting tight).

I would also think that the lower-level C's available know that they'll be pursued after Richards signs. Thus, it makes sense for them to wait until after Richards selects a team.

To me, the Sabres best shot is to make the biggest offer which I also think is likely. With the biggest money on the table and everything we have to offer, I think it's down to us and the Rangers.

that's the problem- there is no vetting on twitter. That's why I rely on the FA trackers from legitimate sports sites that at least have some semblance of journalistic integrity.

Does anybody feel like getting Leino is payback for losing to the Flyers?

According to capgeek.com Buffalo has about $2.5 million left on the cap. If you add on the $6.4 mil for the 10% that they can go over that means they have almost $9 mil to spend....without moving/trading/cutting/buying out anybody. IF they put Kotalk and Morissoon in the minors then you can add another $5mil. They have lots of flexibility and room to do as they please.

But how many players are under contract? A full roster?

If Richards is a no go I expect a big trade.

They would need to sign one of their RFA defensemen and Enroth to complete 20 players and have a full team.

Correction: that would give them 22 players. 13F, 8D and Miller. McCormick wasn't listed so subtract $1.2 from what I posted before.

i keep refreshing waiting for a trade where we send some of our depth at wing for a real center.

i'm ok with the leino deal as long as we move some of our wing depth for a center, but without that i'm not liking it too much.

It's very possible the Sabres realized that Richards is no longer a viable option and decided to pursue the #1 C via trade. Adding Leino gives us excellent depth. We had 4 major needs going into the offseason, addition of Leino fills 3 of them. Improve the team in any way you can.............maybe Roy can be the #1 C until other options become available.

Even if then cannot get Richards, Stastny or Spezza the Sabres are a much better team now than they were just one week ago.

in a trade situation what winger(s) would you be willing to give up to free up the space? It would have to be substantial, no?

From the arena, Leino is the plan B and a center for us. We are out of the Richards sweepstakes. Trades are not off the table.

They planned to go up to meet with Richards but then didn't.

vanek is the only wing i'd be unwilling to trade... i'd almost say ennis to but i wouldn't be opposed if he was in a deal for someone like spezza.

So WGR just reported that Darcy Dumbass said Leino was plan B and they are not pursuing Richards and that this is pretty much their roster. Umm, really??? Well folks, this team is nowheres good enough to win a cup and they are very mediocre upfront. Really disappointed if this is the "center" that they are adding.

Leino is a solid signing...not the big splashy signing that many of you hoped for but he's a solid young player with playoff experience. And a guy who had a monster of a playoffs 2 seasons ago with Philly.

Anytime you can add a player like that you've done well.

Yes...it's always Darcy. He is so powerful he has yet another owner completely mesmerized. In order for you to be correct then Pegula is just another chump. We might as well just self destruct now.

the one big thing i love about leino is that he's a bigtime playoff performer though...we need more of those upfront on this team.

Add in how much better our D is... I'm really happy.

i'm worried about our centers, but we have an owner willing to spend now and we definitely have the assets to acquire one in a trade still.

other than that, our defense looks sick and we have a lot of good wingers....and of course we still have miller and now a dependable backup

If you went to sleep when Philly beat Buffalo and woke up at 5PM today and didn't know any of the soap opera behind how these players moved, wouldn't you agree that the Sabres are a much better team today??

Two upgrades to the D and a C who will atleast be better than Connolly. Peeps there was 1 true #1 center on the market whom we would never even have considered before.

Im disappointed we didnt get Richards then took a deep breath. They are a better team now and it aint all going to be fixed in one off season.

Anyone else think that the plan is to move Tyler Ennis back to center? He was a center before Buffalo, wasn't he?

It shouldn't surprise anyone that we aren't getting Richards. There are a bunch of other teams out there. Regardless of what is reported, he's going to the team that offers him the most money, just like 99% of other athletes.

Our team was already a playoff caliber team before FA started and we are MUCH better today. Who says we aren't a cup contender with Miller in net? This team is going to be amped when the season starts because of what our new owner has said and done so far. Watch this team compete for the cup. Watch for this team to be very active at the trade deadline next season.

I am finally super excited about Buffalo professional sports for a change!
