Paul Hamilton is at the arena and reporting that the Sabres are out of the Richards sweepstakes. Leino may be projected at center. Pegula is not in Newport nor did anybody from the Sabres go there.

They may have contacted Richards' agent and it didn't look any good from the start this morning.

Speculation is that they were long shot and also wanted Leino. Wasting time waiting for Richards may have sunk getting Leino.

Now if they had gotten Richards, I'd declare them a legit Cup contender. As it is, they'll have to fight for it, but they're in the mix. The d-men alone can mean another round further. Boston won the Cup on the strength of defense and goaltending.

If 28 points in 37 playoff games is your definition of mediocre then I don't know if anything would make you happy. Leino is a playoff animal. The kind of player we need. Plus he still has time to improve. A solid move by the Sabres.
