Right now, after two days of free agency who are your top four contenders in the East?

1. Pitts
2. Wash
3. Buff
4. Bos

1. Boston
2. Pittsburgh (if Crosby and Malkin are healthy for a majority of the season)
3. Washington
4. Philly (I still like the core they have without Richards, Carter, Leino, etc.)

I'd put Buffalo at 5 with Tampa Bay, NYR, and Montreal riding our ass like a hemorrhoid towards the end of the season.

Until proven otherwise you can't take Boston out of the top spot. Number 2 and 3 should go to Washington and Pittsburgh assuming their big names can stay healthy. Now at number 4 I give the nod to Tampa Bay assuming they retain Stamkos. Which leads me to think the Sabres at number 5 with a chance to be number 4 if TB faulters.

Buffalo can definitely take Tampa. The Sabres are younger, have better goaltending and better depth. TB may finish higher in the standings because Buffalo's in a tougher division, but the Sabres would win a series between them no doubt.

I disagree on Philly. IMO, they lost a lot of their core and heart this offseason and decided trying to win games 2-1 was the answer. Philly was almost a non-factor in the playoffs. Miller shut them out twice and had the Sabres scored one more goal in game 6, it was over. Boston basically shut down there offense (7 goals in 4 games). Philly has taken a step backwards offensively. That could backfire especially if Briere goes down for any length of time.

With our major defense upgrade every list should include Buffalo

Boston - won cup. Core of team will be back
Washington- good in regular season
Tampa - due to being in weak division
Buffalo- the 3 recent additions will help move team into top four but almost as important is the Sabres went the majority of the season with no backup goalie last season. Having a solid back up will turn what were almost automatic losses last year into very good chance for wins plus give Miller time off will keep him fresh.
