Sabres sign Weber to multi-year deal

The Buffalo Sabres announced Monday they have re-signed defenseman Mike Weber to a multi-year contract. The 23-year-old was a restricted free agent.

The details of the contract have not yet been released, but before the signing the Sabres had $1.3 million in cap space.

well, that about kills our cap.

If the Sabres make any other moves, it will require a trade.

How many players are under contract now?

Signed: 13F, 6D and Miller

RFA (I believe tenured an offer): 2D and Enroth

They could send Kotalik and Morrisson to the minors and save $5mil instantly. They have cap room if they need it.

well, I guess something has to be done. 13F is not enough, especially if Kotalik gets sent down.

12 forwards is 4 lines

most teams keep 12 forwards, 6 defensemen and 2 goalies for each game.

right, it's a 23 man roster and 20 dress for games.

13 fwds means one backup for 12 regulars, whereas we'd have 8 defenders, which means 2 backups for 6 regulars. That doesn't make much sense.

It really is not that much of a problem.

Send Kotalik and Morrisonn down.

Re-sign Ellis or Grier to be the 13th forward to a minimum deak (Ellis would take a two way deal). They can call up Ellis or Adam or Kassian or Foligno to fill in for injuries.

Figure that the opening roster will have 13 forwards and 7 Dman and 2 goalies.

I don't think it is that big of a deal.

That's 22. They need 23.

No they don't. 23 is the max. They do not have to carry that many

They only need to carry 20. The benefit of Rochester being an hour away is that if you need a replacement you call them by 4:00 and they are there for the game.

If Kotalik and Morrisonn get send down as expected to be unde the cap are they allowed to recalled on an emergency basis or no if it puts them over the cap?

I believe that they only count for the actual number of days that they are on the roster. Regardless, the Sabres are flirting with the ceiling. I would bet they make a trade to eleviate some of the money.

They almost HAVE to make a trade to take away some of that money. They still have to sign Enroth at the least to have a backup goalie. Then they will have to take care of their restricted free agents that are left.

Trade Kotalik and that 2nd rounder for some AHL fodder....

well they could send Kotalik and/or Morisson to Rochester and just never call them up. Use cheaper, less experienced guys to fill in for any injuries.

But, that may not be the best idea.
