When middle linebacker Randall Godfrey was knocked out of the lineup early last season with injuries, the Titans plugged in Frank Chamberlin.
Things were going well, then Chamberlin broke his left hand. He was outfitted in a cast and his focus turned back to special teams.
Enter Rocky Calmus. Looking back, the Titans believe they caught a break even though Calmus was option No. 3.
Calmus, who had experience at middle linebacker from his college days at Oklahoma, was productive in four games before Godfrey returned.
With those events in the backs of their minds, the Titans went into this offseason prepared to head off potential trouble. Excluding the rookies, each of the linebackers have been working at all three spots — left, right and middle.
''First off, it will help you with depth because everybody can play everywhere,'' said Chamberlin, who's heading into his fourth NFL season. ''But having an understanding of what the other guys are doing, it's always good when you know what they are doing, too.''
