The fickle finger of fate pointing at Rams' Warner

Kurt Warner broke his pinky, and now we act like his career is in jeopardy. It's safe to assume that a pinky never has been so powerful.

This is how cruel a quarterback's life can be. One injury, no matter how seemingly insignificant, can put a man's stardom on medical alert. In the odd world of quarterbacking, where fame is the most fleeting, Warner, who is one month from training camp, must prove himself again.

There is not a job more glorious or inglorious in sports. In five NFL seasons, Warner has gone from blessed gentleman with an unlikely tale to, supposedly, cursed patient headed for an ending that will come too soon.

It sounds like he's a quarterback. To test his right to the title, we make one request:

    Get up.

That's what great quarterbacks do. And Warner has most of the traits of a great quarterback. From obscurity, he has led St. Louis to two Super Bowls, won a championship and logged a historically high passer rating of 98.2. He has thrown 41 touchdown passes in a season. He has directed one of the NFL's all-time most dangerous offenses.
