As of Saturday (June 21) only 100 days remained until the new Soldier Field opens to the public for the first time, when the Bears host the Green Bay Packers on Monday night, Sept. 29.
The transformation is already stunning. Only the name remains the same. Some architecture critics have blasted the stadium's exterior appearance and the sharp contrast it presents to the Field Museum, the Shedd Aquarium and Adler Planetarium directly to the north. But everything surrounding the new stadium will be aesthetically superior. Pitted-out parking lots liberally sprinkled on game day with broken beer bottles and chicken bones are being replaced by grassy fields, picnic and tailgating areas, gardens, a winter sledding hill and enough trees to stock a nursery -- 1,400 to be exact. Flowers and trees are taking the place of blacktop and pavement....
