    Soldier's return

As of Saturday (June 21) only 100 days remained until the new Soldier Field opens to the public for the first time, when the Bears host the Green Bay Packers on Monday night, Sept. 29.
The transformation is already stunning. Only the name remains the same. Some architecture critics have blasted the stadium's exterior appearance and the sharp contrast it presents to the Field Museum, the Shedd Aquarium and Adler Planetarium directly to the north. But everything surrounding the new stadium will be aesthetically superior. Pitted-out parking lots liberally sprinkled on game day with broken beer bottles and chicken bones are being replaced by grassy fields, picnic and tailgating areas, gardens, a winter sledding hill and enough trees to stock a nursery -- 1,400 to be exact. Flowers and trees are taking the place of blacktop and pavement.

    Phillips clarifies Bank One agreement

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - Bears President and CEO Ted Phillips issued a statement Wednesday in response to an article in Tuesday's editions of the Philadelphia Inquirer that erroneously indicated that the Bears had sold the name of their team to Bank One.

In a 12-year, multi-million deal announced earlier this week, Bank One will become the Bears' presenting partner beginning this season. That in no way means that the team will be known as anything but the Chicago Bears.

The newspaper issued a retraction Wednesday, reporting that the phrase "Bears football presented by Bank One" will "appear on signage, on cup holders and on service people's uniforms-and in connection with the Bears' television and radio programming. (But) it will not supplant the name of the Chicago Bears and is not intended to do so."
