Well, with the "frenzy" starting up, we might as well make a thread for it.

Rumored that Seattle has come to an agreement with Tavaris Jackson.

http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/3708/tarvaris-jackson

Seattle seems to be taking a bit of a head-scratching approach to building a team. I'll be interested to see how they do in 2011.

Pete carroll has his team in terrible shape. they have absolutely no one in place for Hasselbeck's eventual departure. He's traded a ton of picks for very marginal players. If his team doesn't have a better year (and let's admit that they over acheived due to a crappy division 7-9 playoff appearance if i remember correctly), after this year, they won't have the picks to really help the team.

He got off lucky for the USC scandal and found another gig when he probably knew very well what was going on and did nothing to stop it. Then he takes a marginally decent team with aging players and treats it like a kid in a candy store telling everyone that he's a genius and really knows how to work with players.

I really dislike carroll.

Im not a Carroll fan as an NFL coach, but he did bring his team to the playoffs in his first year. He also had one of the biggest upsets in playoffs history... he aint going anywhere so fast

2. The Kolb Sweepstakes: Technically speaking, the Kolb-to-Arizona trade hasn't been executed yet -- it only seems like it has. We've been anticipating Kolb becoming a Cardinal for so long now that it might feel rather anticlimactic should it happen. Arizona is looking to ship cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and a draft pick to the Eagles in exchange for the 26-year-old Kolb, and that's likely to be more enticing than anything Seattle can dangle in front of Philly.
-- And another thing: Kolb isn't the only available arm who's still young enough to build around. Don't forget about Vince Young, he of the 26-14 record as a starter in the NFL. Somebody's going to give him a second chance, and it could be Philadelphia, Miami or Buffalo.

Willie Colon

In addition to the Steelers, three other teams are reportedly in the running for free agent T/G Willie Colon -- the Bears, Bills, and Seahawks.
Colon wants to return to Pittsburgh, but his market is heating up. We've heard on more than one occasion that the Bears are serious contenders for Colon, who would play guard in Chicago. The Seahawks have an opening at left guard. Buffalo has had offensive line deficiencies for as long as we can remember.

I find this "negotiation period" interesting. Does anyone think that there are verbal agreements being made that will be broken come Friday? It seems to me that in general the agreements that are made are for so much money that other teams are out of the bidding, but you never know. Once the numbers are public info, then other teams know what they were up against.

Also, anyone heard anything about Cullen Jenkins? The only team I've heard linked to him so far is Denver. ESPN said we're a "dark horse" but I don't think that was based on anything real.

The Steelers are reportedly going to release LT Max Starks, which is shocking to me. He is a good LT when healthy.

My only thought is his neck injury is still bothersome. He went on IR last year after huring his neck. Otherwise, I am shocked they would cut the guy.

EDIT:

Here is the explanation (http://twitter.com/#!/EdBouchette/statuses/96414210325618688) - Apparently his weight is up to the high 300's after his neck injury last year. Totally let himself go.

bush is mainly a danger returning punts whereas sproles can return kicks AND be more effective on screens than bush

neither is a #1 option running the ball though

trapezeus

Am I missing something or is that what players of a good coach do.............

Does a good coach in his first year trade for a running back that isn't very good in a 3-4 year stint in tennessee, give up a 4th, cut him before camp, trade for another running back, trade for a useless QB that requires him to still sign JP.

He has traded a lot to get a marginal team that had a losing record and lucked out to be in the playoffs. They had one decent game and a phenomenal 3rd Qrt in that playoff game.

Would you leverage the next 3 seasons to have the core that they have now and watch them sign tavaris jackson as the solution to starting QB?

if the answer is yes, then great. You have a great coach on a great team in seattle. If the answer is no, then you are like me and can't imagine why he isn't run through the ringer more in the press. That was an outrageously bad year for a guy that everyone fawned over because of his USC dominance.

They were talking on the radio here in Denver yesterday about the Broncos being interested in Mebane. They didn't mention Jenkins. I expect them to sign someone though because they are short on D-lineman right now. They were only about a million under the cap though, so they traded WR Gaffney and apparently Brian Dawkins is restructuring his contract. So they seem to be freeing up money to make a move.

It certainly seems as if Clabo wanted to return to Atlanta all along and only used the Bills' interest as leverage. It's important signing for the continuity of Matt Ryan and the passing offense, as Clabo was one of the premier right tackles in the NFL last year. Per Pete Prisco CBSSports.com, the Falcons are now expected to turn their attention to left guard Justin Blalock.

It also could take any remaining air out of the market for Edwards’ services.

There is more than that:

1) He turns 30 in November

2) He wants a big money contract

3) He missed the 2008 season with a knee injury, and since then has had to limit practice time due to ongoing knee issues.

4) 1st round picks are more valuable than they used to be now that there is a rookie slotting system that restricts what they can get paid.

How has the defense improved?

Like them or not, Whitner and Poz were the best players at their respective positions. They have moved Moats inside which is idiotic. Fitz is a great back-up, but as he plays more will be exposed. They still have no TE. They are looking at starting Pears and Urbik on the OLine. They have very little at LB, unless Barnett and Merriman stay healthy (Unlikely).

Counting on rookies like Dareus and Sheppard to contribute this year is silly - especially in light of the fact that they have not had the camps or development time rookies had in previous years.

And they are unlikely to get breaks again this year like they did against Detroit and the Bengals last year. This team is still devoid of talent.

It is going to be a long season.

Dareus is already impressing in TC and Merriman is blowing people away. WGR reported this morning that Merriman was just absolutely making them say, "Wow!". You can take the negative stance that he's just going to get hurt again...on the other hand, he may not.

Poz was nothing outstanding so replacing someone who wasn't outstanding doesn't automatically mean it'll be worse. Barnett will probably perform similarly if not better. Troup has more muscle now and it will help him fend off the double teams he got last yr. Williams at CB has been looking like the ballhawk that they drafted him to be. Even if he wasn't, McGee is back who is still a very decent corner and we didn't lose Florence. Moats has a yr under his belt - which should help in greatly as last yr, my biggest complain about him was that he was taking bad angles to get to the ball. Where he gets placed is still too early to be complaining about. We also have much better depth on the DLine.

Our Oline isn't much worse - remember that we had Cornell Green at RT last yr. Like I said, it's about the same until we get a RT that can step up. I'm hoping Cordaro Howard or Wrotto are the ones, but we'll see.

It's easy to focus on the negative...what about the positives? We gave the Patriots a good 1st game last yr and lost 38-30. We lost to Baltimore in OT 37-34. We lost to the Steelers in overtime last year 19-16. Those were good teams. Quite a few games were lost by 3 pts or less. And this without a defense that could stop the run...or do anything!

In some ways, I'd like us to be bad so we could have a chance at Luck...but quite frankly, I see us returning to that dreaded middle ground draft order where the high impact players are gone, and the 2nd level players are too high to be picked at this point. :(

Now stop hacking into Lecter's acct, Op...

First of all, Barnett is a much linebacker than Poz, its not even close. Barents makes plays, poz doesn't, second Wilson at worse is on par with Monte, and unlike Monte wont get absolutely abused by tight ends. You do realize Monte had one of the worst seasons statistically worse seasons ever covering them. Third, to discount dareus cause he's a rookie is narrow minded

The NFL missed OTA's but players worked out on their own & one week of Training Camp. How important is that? I don't think very myself. If any position can afford to lose a week of camp it is DL anyway.

Aside from the Rookies, players drafted last year have put on weight & muscle & have a years experience. Add a healthy Merriman & Barnett into the mix of a team that has now played this defense for a year, & I think this defense will be greatly improved from last year.

From rotoworld:

A league sources tells the Baltimore Sun that the asking price for Giants DE Osi Umeyiora has dropped to a second-round pick.

The same source confirms that five teams are in the hunt, including the Ravens and Patriots. Several members of the Ravens front office are urging GM Ozzie Newsome to pull the trigger, but he's reportedly concerned about Umenyiora's history of hip and knee injuries. Newsome also has salary cap issues to consider with Ray Rice and Joe Flacco in line for extensions. Signing Haloti Ngata to a long-term deal would helping free up space, lowering his 2011 salary. NFL Network's Jason LaCanfora adds the Falcons to the list of teams interested in Umenyiora at the right price.

Not a FA signing...but this is a *****:

Mike Patterson has a brain AVM (arteriovenous malformation) and will require surgery or radiation.
Patterson wasn't suffering from dehydration after all. AVM is a tangle of the blood vessels in the skull and recovery times depend on the severity. He may end up needing brain surgery to repair the AVM. All hope for Patterson is not lost, however, as Pacers PG A.J. Price had the same condition and is now back playing. However, the Eagles can't count on having Patterson on the field anytime soon.

http://rotoworld.com/headlines/nfl/208526/mike-patterson-diagnosed-with-brain-injury

IF you hadn't been following it, he collapsed at practice the other day, went into convulsions on the field. After a day, they said it was due to dehydration. Then they ran their tests and came up with this.

I had a client die of an AVM years ago. Ain't worth it Mike, retire now. You're lucky to be alive right now...get it treated and move on.

I'm not nearly as down on the defense. Merriman is the wild card. He actually has a better chance of staying healthy than he's had in years. If he's close to being back to form, he's one of a handful of players in the NFL that can transform a defense. Not just make it a little better, but transform it.

Dareus has as much of a chance to cause problems for an offense as Suh had last year. Lots of teams are going to have problems matching up on him one on one. If that happens, it opens things up for others along the front 7.

The biggest question is George Edwards. I don't have much confidence in knowing how to use people correctly.
