The ink on his new contract still wasn't dry. Neither was the sunscreen Neil O'Donnell had rubbed on his nose moments earlier.

But the Titans had their backup quarterback back yesterday and were feeling protected again.

''The old man is a pretty good safety net,'' offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger said of O'Donnell, who turns 37 next month.

Outfitted in T-shirt and shorts, O'Donnell shook hands and received hugs from many of his coaches and teammates after flying back into town to sign a two-year deal. He'll practice today, but got a head start by throwing passes to Heimerdinger's son Brian.

O'Donnell, released by the Titans in February for salary cap reasons, received a $90,000 signing bonus as part of his new deal, which also includes base salaries of $755,000 and $855,000 over the next two seasons
