Maybin is guaranteed for 15 mil. With the release of him now, the cap hit is 9 mil this year.

Not sure how many more times this needs to be said.

Cap hits don't matter this year, since there's no cap floor and we aren't even close to the cap ceiling.

Also, where'd you get the 9m figure? That doesn't seem realistic based on how the Bills normally write out their contracts. I'm pretty sure he only had around 5m total left on his contract, and that was in salaries, not necessarily guaranteed money.

Unless I've read something wrong, there is a cap ceiling this season and next, just no floor. Limit on the upper end, not on the lower.

Right... I believe the intent was to say we were avoiding the floor not the ceiling.

no cap limit in 2011 kids. That doesn't mean it should go unnoticed in my opinion. It's just an example of how the Bills front office is gaming the system to their financial benefit. Money is worth more than wins to this franchise. I don't think they see the 2 as relationship oriented. But, I could be wrong.

But, this was a smart move. Re-investing into the OL would be smart too.

How is it an example of the FO gaming the system? From the sounds of it, if Maybin's cap hit was high enough they could have simply kept him on the team for a few more years to help reach the cap floor in 2013.

Besides, 15 mill was guaranteed in 09. His salary is 757K with bonuses available if he hit the incentives which he likely never did.

Not sure where this 9 mill number is coming from.

"8/21/2009: Signed a five-year, $17.6 million contract. The deal contains $15 million guaranteed, including a $7.087 million signing bonus. Another $7.4 million is available through incentives based on playing time and sacks. 2011: $757,500, 2012: $1.12 million, 2013: $1.4825 million, 2014: $1.5 million (Voidable Year), 2015: Free Agent"

Not that they are completely trustworthy but they were discussing it on WGR last week and somebody tossed out an $8M figure (might have been Jerry Sullivan).

My response was of a general viewpoint to the no cap limit in 2011 post, and had nothing to do with the Maybin release. Proper comprehension within my post is a requirement for understanding the statement behind it. It was nothing more than my opinion of the no cap limit in 2011 rule, and how the Bills are using that to their benefit which should not go unnoticed.

All 757k of it? Is that even vet minimum anymore?

I don't know what they're planning on, but they have 2 open roster spots. My guess is that they'll simply sign a couple of weenies from the street to fill those spots.

My understanding is a team like the Jets can exceed the ceiling this year & next as long as teams the the Bucs & Bills are below it. I think it is a league wide cap & floor this year & next, not a team cap or floor.

However, teams can exceed the cap but it doesn't have anything to do with teams being under it. The must meet a minimum of 99% of the cap league wide, they could go over that. And if they don't hit it, the NFL foots the remainder.

Unless I've read something wrong, there is a cap ceiling this season and next, just no floor. Limit on the upper end, not on the lower.

The cap is the same for all teams. It is $120,375,000. There is an exception for this year only that allows teams to borrow $3M from future years for veteran contracts, so the cap could be as high as 123.375M for some teams (but it would be counted against a future year).

People are confusing cash and cap. Teams can move money around and make cap room in the present by moving more cap allocation into the future. Because of the growth of the cap in recent years teams have been able to do that to avoid cap trouble. If the cap were to go down they would be in trouble, but since the new TV contracts will probably be for much more there is little chance any team gets in "cap jail".

There is no team-by-team salary floor this year, but there is a league-wide requirement that 99% of the cap celing must be spent it cash. For 2012 the league must spend 95% of the cap in actual cash, league-wide However, that is an average of cash spent among all teams, so some can spend much less and some can spend more. Keep in mind they must spend that is cash, the actual cap allocation of those monies is much different.

From 2013 through the end of the deal each individual team will be required to spend 89% of the cap limit in cash payments. This is the team minimum that everyone is talking about.

If the league spends less than the league-wide minimum, the difference must be paid out to the players.

Saying Maybin got $15M guaranteed is probably not accurate. He may have got that much guaranteed for injury, but not skill. The total value of his contract without incentives and escalators was a little over $15M. The guaranteed monies he received are likely the bonuses he got.

Maybin received a signing bonus of $2M in 2009, allocated at $333,333 per season for the 6 seasons of the deal. He received a guaranteed option bonus of $7,087,500 in 2010, which was allocated over the remaining 5 years of his deal at $1,417,500 per season. Upon his released, his salary comes off the books and the Bills save the $757,500 in salary he was scheduled to earn. Next year, in 2012, his remaining bonus will accelerate and count against the cap. The acceleration occurs next season, since he is being released after June 1.

Thus, Maybe counts as $1,750,833 in dead money in 2011. He will count at $5,252,500 in deal money for 2012. The Bills paid him a little less than $11M for his 2 years of service.

What Icky said (very well, BTW), except I think there is an additional 3.5mil that a team can use and bring the highest cap to $126,875,000. Then, an additional 1.5 mil in 2012.

http://nflcommunications.com/2011/07/21/nfl-clubs-approve-comprehensive-agreement/

There are two formulas in play here...the individual team salary cap figure with a somewhat 'soft' ceiling and no floor, and a league-wide cash-to-cap with a cumulative floor.

Signing Bonus: $2 million, $15 million guaranteed, Incentives: $7.4 million

That "guarantee" was likely for injury, not skill. Full guarantees are rare. They report it is guaranteed, but not for skill. I don't know for sure, but I doubt Maybin collected more than the $11M he was already paid.
