On Detroit's second play, Merriman came across to stop running back Jahvid Best after a 3-yard gain. On the next play, he shot through untouched to tackle Best for a 1-yard loss. Those are the plays that put opposing offenses in difficult down-and-distance situations and can lead to turnovers.
The Lions had third-and-12 on their next possession. Merriman took down Aaron Brown after a 10-yard gain, forcing Detroit to punt. Paul Posluszny would have made the tackle, too -- padding his tackle stats after Brown picked up the first down.Merriman was done after that play.
