Pretty simple exercise. Position-by-position comparison between the last season of the Jauron era (2009) and the opening roster of the second season of the Nix/Gailey.

Is our talent better, worse, or even with two seasons ago?

2011--Byrd-Wilson-Searcy-Scott

2009--Byrd-Wilson-Whitner-Scott (Wendling, C.Harris & Johnson)

Push. Not having to listen to Donte Whitners bull**** makes up for any less talent Searcy may have.

I voted better, I think Searcy is the wild card.

Whitner is way better than Searcy, even if Bills fans hate him.

The difference is Searcy is a back up. Whitner was a starter in 09.

According to PFF Wilson was the third best safety in the league in 2009.

I voted better.

I voted worse, but only slightly. I actually think our starters will be equal or better, but our depth isn't quite as good.

2011 Wilson > 2009 Wilson
2011 Scott < 2009 Scott
2011 Byrd < 2009 Byrd
2011 Searcy < 2009 Whitner
2011 A. Williams > (Wendling, C.Harris & Johnson)

I've grouped Aaron Williams with our Safeties because think in a pinch he could be shifted there and although the talents at S isn't as strong as it was in 2009 I think the better D-line and LBs making the importance of S play less and as a result a push. I'd love to see us go back to a zone defense though so Byrd could play to his strengths as a pick off artist.

I voted Push, but wouldn't be surprised if by mid-season the consensus will be largely voting Better. Byrd will probably bounce back a little bit, Wilson may lack Whitner's run support but IMO he'll be better against the passing game, Scott is a wash, and Searcy should improve.

Too early to say. We knew what Whitner was capable of. He was something of an underachiever. Searcy is a total unknown at this point. He's slower than Whitner. He's stouter, and may hit harder and has some coverage experience. My guess is that Whitner is probably better in pass coverage, and Searcy in run support, but we really don't know yet. The other difference is that Wilson is going to be on the field a lot more.
