Bills should put a claim in on OT Steve Maneri, just cut by the Pats

Steve Maneri makes a lot of sense for the Bills. He was a TE in college who converted to OT as an undrafted FA last year for Houston. The Pats liked him as a project, and claimed him. After 3 games inactive on the roster, they cut him and signed him to the PS. He finished the year on the PS.

This year in camp, Maneri looked pretty good. He beat out former swing OT Mark Levoir for the 4th OT job, but was cut when the team signed Brian Waters. The Pats drafted Nate Solder and need veterans more than projects because they are in win-now mode, so Maneri was a victim of circumstance. He isn't as big as the other Bills OT, but is athletic and has received good coaching. He is probably a better pass protector than drive blocker, but he really looked pretty good this preseason. He is tall (6-6) and athletic, and has his weight up to about 300#. A young OL with promise, I like the kid.

He's an o-lineman. Why would the Bills want him?!

Yes, he has played both LT and RT this preseason, although he did so against backups.

Colin Brown is bigger by about 30-35 lbs. and is built more for a drive blocking OL. That makes sense for the Bills, as it did for the Chiefs (who drafted him) and Ravens (where he was on the PS). That probably fits what the Bills want better.

However, Maneri is much more athletic than Brown and does a good job in pass-protection, which the Bills struggle with. However, he may be a better fit in a zone-blocking scheme.

they might sign him and cut brown if they want to go with 2 pure swing tackles instead of really just one in hairston.... i think they will probably add an ot to the ps...

I saw on another board that the Vikings cut Ryan Cook who can play C, G and T. I wouldn't mind pursing him and letting go and/or getting Colin Brown to sign to the practice squad.

that would make more sense than signing mckinnie or gurode or waters. signing cook, ( if healthy), would be a more versatile veteran option instead of c brown...

We could have signed Gurode and McKinnie and made up for 2 bad drafts in one swoop. Wait, that would be risky and cost money.

It would go against their scouting practice of finding OL at The Big Tree on Wing night.

I see the Pats* signed Aiken to be their long-snapper.

He played TE through college, at 6'6", 290 lbs. he'd need to put on some weight to play tackle. Our tackles are some of the lightest as it is and this kid is around 15 pounds lighter then them.

We've already got one young project with Hairston.

                          Maybe a PS candidate.

He was claimed by the Chiefs, who have not been happy with their RT. Given the similarities between the Patriots and Chiefs offenses (same coaching tree), you might see him week 1.
