View Full Version : Stevie and the Bills are not close to a deal

According to LaCanfora:

http://blogs.nfl.com/2011/09/07/contract-talks-stalled-for-several-high-profile-players/

"and Buffalo traded proposals with receiver Steve Johnson, but those sides are nowhere near a deal at this point, sources said."

Stevie probably wants Santonio Holmes money and the Bills are offering Roscoe Parrish money... It's going to take 7-8 mill per to lock up SJ13 IMO.

Im ok with this strategy, obviously Stevie is taking a risk, (1) Injury (to him or Fitz),
(2) he does not back up last seasons performance. If everything works out for SJ the Bills will have to pay a larger sum. No problem with establishing parameters its the business side of negotiations.

hold off until he shows production again, you can always tag him

(2) he does not back up last seasons performance. If everything works out for SJ the Bills will have to pay a larger sum. No problem with establishing parameters its the business side of negotiations. My problem is that I can't see the Bills making him their highest paid player. 8 mill per is more than any other player and more than the new big contract they gave Kyle Williams.

They are probably thinking they can land him for 5 or 6 mill per and they are nuts.

But yes, he has to at least continue his play level.

This one scares me because I'm not sure the Bills will actually get it done.

The franchise would pay him 11.3 mill... I can't see the Bills paying that either.

The Bills have a track record of overpaying mediocre players like Kelsay, and letting the really good ones like Peters go.

I'm afraid their negotiations with Johnson may not end well.

I'm afraid their negotiations with Johnson may not end well.Scares the hell out of me. He's my favorite player since the SB years.

Like I said, I'm thinking Santonio Holmes money... not Andre Johnson or Larry Fitz of course, not Brandon Marshall money, but the next tier... which is where I put Holmes and someone like say Miles Austin.

With Evans gone, Stevie now has the pressure to produce as a #1 guy. Therefore, he's going to want to get paid as such. Problem with that is he hasn't shown he can produce consistently.

Not surprised here. I'm not expecting a new deal until about week 4 or so.

That's unfair to Nix none of the guys he didnt resign was drafted by him. So how can you say that?He inherits the entire team. If he wants to only operate with "his" guys, then make the massive purge and let's move on. It's ridiculous to think he can't be held accountable for losing a player drafted by the Bills before he was here. Does the philosophy only apply to guys he drafted? Why? We have no players before his time that have any worth?

The Bills probably loved the Kyle Williams extension. The franchise tag is 12+ mill which is the average annual salary of the top 5 paid DT's... Yet Kyle extends for almost half that (6+). I thought I would go there before I hear about how they kept their own by paying going rate on Kyle Williams.

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d81e4d644/article/potential-franchisetag-numbers-highlighted-by-increase-for-dts

If Kyle chooses to provide a hometown bargain so be it... I'm good with it. But the Bills should never expect that from all their players when it's contract extension time. Stevie will have a market value and the Bills will likely have to pay it.

Here is the problem and I said this as soon as camp opened.
#1 priority sign Stevie before season started.
If the Bills were smart they would have signed him BEFORE Lee Evans was traded and SJ would get #2 WR $$$......Now SJ and his agents want #1 WR $$$.
Not a smart move on the Bills, will cost them $2 mill per more now...
Bills know that SJ is a huge fan fovorite, imagine if the Bills let him look elsewhere.........YIKES...

I do think it will get done though, but they will have to pay more then 1 month agao...

http://blogs.buffalonews.com/billboard/2011/09/williams-deal-good-long-range-.html

The new contract Kyle Williams signed with the Bills averages $7.25 million a year, according to a News source. The deal includes a signing bonus of $4.75 million and his base salaries this year and the next two seasons are guaranteed. It's a little more than Casey Hampton (who is older) got from Pittsburgh, a shade less than Vince Wilfork ($8 million a year) makes from New England.

The good thing for Williams is it's spread out well. His base salary is $3.85 million in 2013 and $4.35 million in 2014. That makes it very likely Williams will see that money. It's something the Bills take a certain amount of pride in - they try not to put "phony money" in deals and it's structured to give Williams a very good chance of seeing the full deal. The deal also isn't loaded with roster bonus money. He gets a $2 million roster bonus next year and $1 million the year after. So it isn't structured to more quickly "fill up" the cash total of any one year, which is good to see the Bills doing. They have filled up their cash more quickly in some deals in recent years.

If Stevie is in the same boat as Kyle, I'd expect when he's extended to fall between Holmes and Sidney Rice, so around 7 mil a year. They may front-load his more than Kyle's, depending on who else they want to extend this coming off-season (if that makes sense? Off-season 2012).

The Bills think he is one of the top 5 DT's in the league... but they paid top 15... That's a hometown discount.

You and I may think he's not top 5... I think he's top 10. And in the top 10, he still is cheaper than what we probably should have paid.

If we extend him to 8 mill per, that 3 mill can be spent on another player.

We have a fixed total team salary figure of around 100 mill IMO... and that 11 mill franchise tag may even mean cutting another player.

We can pay 11 but we can't pay 8?

They would let him walk IMO.

With the advent of the 13 million more in cap they're going to have just thanks to the ESPN deal I believe that can and will afford it. Also, I don't think it's 100 million, probably closer to 110 by midseason after extensions are all said and done. But again, that's conjecture on my part.

Who have we drafted that he has actually re-signed... No one. Williams contract wasn't up yet. But I give him credit for getting that done.

His statement is that he will be building the team by drafting them, developing them, and then keeping them. So far he has not done that... He has not re-signed a player that we have drafted when their contract was up. That will be the situation with Stevie if he isn;t extended prior to FA. And using your logic it's fine if Stevie leaves because Nix didn't draft him either... or that it isn't Nix's fault since he didn't draft him.

I can buy the logic if he can deliver... So far I think that is still in question which is why I gave it a question mark.

If they difference between 1 and 5 is huge, that may make things a little less "discounted". Although, if I were an agent, I'm not sure I would agree to that big fo a difference... Maybe it's a hometown discount...

sure after 1 year that is true, and for underperforming Vets that is true, but for guys who are studs and performed well he should sign them I hear you.

The whole point is NOT black and white dude, your basing your whole claim that Nix doesn't follow his philosophy after 1 year and 2 guys that many of us wanted to ditch anyway.

My first argument was he didn't draft them, but thats not THE ONLY reason, think outside the box man.

Its not that hard, Nix has done nothing to disprove that philosophy.

If he doesnt resign, say for example, Johnson and Wood then you start questioning, but basing your claim off of Poz and Whitner is RIDICULOUS

Nix is building his scheme and if he feels that guys from previous regimes are ESSENTIAL to keep then he will, but he is BUILDING HIS TEAM, so when he says draft and keep its a combination of a few factors

There is a fetish for this guy that is unreal. I am a homer, as much as anybody, but to act like Stevie is the end all is ****ing crazy.

This is a WR that drops a lot of passes. A lot. Everybody wants to pontificate how Fitzy couldn't get us to the next level; I would contend that he would stand a much better chance if WR's don't drop his passes.

As far as the argument about Lee and Stevie. Stevie was #1 when Lee was here. Trading him didn't make a bit of difference. I agree that it is a reasonable argument, I am just saying that if Stevie's agent sat down considering his guy the #2 behind Lee, who was coming off of a terrible year, SJ should get a new agent.

It wouldn't take much...tell Ralph to bring some opera glasses to the next game, so he can read the jerseys in the stands. Stevie is a fan favorite, and seems to be the face of the franchise at the moment, which Lee never was.

**** you, pay me.

Nix did fail to sign Poz and Whitner. However, I did not question those moves in this thread. But since you want to go there.

The goal is to build a winner. If you won't sign better talent, and you won't/can't re-sign your own how will we get there?

Nix will resign the GOOD players that HE DRAFTED. What he didn't do was resign the flotsam that Jauron drafted.

He wants to make the team better. Can't do that resigning MEDIOCRE players.

The argument was that he has not re-signed a guy the Bills drafted when their contract was up... That is a true statement.
but that not because that is NIx's Philosophy, it's because Jauron drafts sucked. They tried to resign Poz but he wasn't good enough to be paid what the Jags gave him.

Nix knows what he wants to pay SJ. The news that they aren't close tells me it's more SJ's agent asking for stupid money. Any GM who pays what a player wants is a chump.

The whole point is NOT black and white dude, your basing your whole claim that Nix doesn't follow his philosophy after 1 year and 2 guys that many of us wanted to ditch anyway. I'm not making this black and white to be honest. I merely stating the fact that he hasn't yet proven he can implement his philosophy. I agree that losing both Poz and Whitner is fine if they can be replaced. But it was also not proving his philosophy. And on the surface it went against his philosophy. I'm not overly concerned with Poz and Whitner. But, if Stevie is what we think he is, that is the chance to Nix to prove that he is serious about his philosophy.

My first argument was he didn't draft them, but thats not THE ONLY reason, think outside the box man. Whether he drafted them or not is irrelevant. They are on the team and were drafted by us. In situations like that we would be dealing with re-signing one of our own and someone that we developed.

Its not that hard, Nix has done nothing to disprove that philosophy. He also has done zero to prove it as well. Again, my statement was of the current facts, it hasn't mattered that much yet... I'm worried that it may with Stevie.

If he doesnt resign, say for example, Johnson and Wood then you start questioning, but basing your claim off of Poz and Whitner is RIDICULOUS It's not ridiculous to be critical on your GM on a 4 and 12 team.

Nix is building his scheme and if he feels that guys from previous regimes are ESSENTIAL to keep then he will, but he is BUILDING HIS TEAM, so when he says draft and keep its a combination of a few factors That true. However, losing your own talent and not adequately replacing is getting worse. Even losing your own talent and not upgrading it staying stagnant... and for a 4 and 12 team that should not be an option. That's partly why I started the offseason scoreboard thread... to capture how we did in getting better on overall talent from that phase.

Look, I'm totally good with being optimistic and I won't judge that. That's a great way to look at it. But, I have serious concerns with the Bills doing what it takes to keep any good players that they develop. It really worries me when we talk about a guy who's likely to command 7-8 or even 9 mill per.

Okay X, tell me what SJ is worth right now. Then tell me what he's worth if he has a good year as the #1. Then tell me what number that is so high you wouldn't pay it. I'm curious. Would you pay SJ $10M/year right now?

PTRRight now he is worth 7-8 mill per. I consider him to be a valid #1 WR and a player on the level of Miles Austin.

I think at years end he will be about in the same place. In that case, I would still pay him 7-8 mill per. If he gets even better and puts himself in say Brandon Marshall area, he could command 9-10 and we should pay it.

I would not extend him until a few games in at the earliest to make sure he won't regress. But, I also would not wait until FA starts or franchise him.

We have drafted very few players on this roster that were actually worth keeping around for the duration of their first contract, let alone resigning them.

Whitner is gone...good. the POS is gone...good, and now extremely overpaid. Williams was drafted, performed, and re-signed. Good.

Let it play out for a few weeks and see where the talks are then.

Brandon Marshall had 3 1000+ yard seasons and 23 TDs before getting his big deal.

It's a negotiation, Stevie's camp may want the world right now, but you can't throw 8m a year at him based on a 16 game sample. Show me more.

They'll go back and forth but I expect him to be here for the foreseeable future.

So you and I are on the same page. Right now SJ is worth about $7-8M a year. If half way through the season he is putting up #1 WR numbers then I can see giving him $9M+/yr. But if SJ's agent is asking for $10M+/yr now that's plain absurd.

Draft em

Try to develop them

Try to resign them, but if they want too much, trade them for 4th round picks.

Repeat

Using that logic, if the Bills had Manning or Brady, we should let them go for 4th rounders.

People do know how to overreact, glad to see it's not a wasted art form anymore.

This stuff happens all the time around the league, not just the Bills. Titans looked to be in danger of not giving Chris Johnson a contract for a while. Desean Jackson still isn't close to getting an extension from Philly (who reportedly now has the cap room to sign a big contract). These sorts of reports come out ALL the time, then maybe a month or two later, things "heat up" and the guy ends up signed shortly after that. If the Bills are specifically looking to re-sign Johnson, I believe they'll end up getting it done.

The "team discount" also needs to come in play... We all agree Steve deserves a fat raise... but we need to be able to lock up future FA's as well as bring in missing pieces. I would hope Steve doesn't try to break the bank so we still have room to make significant moves to maintain, and continue to build a true contender...

I just hope after the negotiations end there is a solid happy medium found.

SJ just said there aren't any discussions going on and he's a Bill 'for now'. No plans to either, unless something gets going somewhere down the road.
