It's the backplate of that logo, to hold the lights inside and the pipe used to blow smoke out of the nose.

as much as I dislike the logo in general, I did like it when the eyes lit up and they blew smoke after a goal.

We sprayed them with "Slug Be Gone" and they disappeared. I believe to be replaced with traditional logo and First Niagara Center signage.

finally got my pictures developed at the Keith Urban Concert on the 8th (girlfriend is a huge fan me I am NOT!) I took a picture of the scoreboard and the wall that seperates the 100 level from the 200 level. Wish I knew what they did with the swords that used to hang from the scoreboard.
