    Decade's an Eternity for NFL Coaches Today

    JUN 26 (morning)--The shelf life for an NFL head coach these days seems just slightly longer than the shelf life for a gallon of milk. Maybe we should blame Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil for this.

    Vermeil introduced "burnout" to the NFL's vocabulary when he resigned as the Philadelphia Eagles' coach after the 1982 season. He was emphasizing not only his workaholic ways, but also the extraordinary stress the job entailed. Since Vermeil's famous remark, nobody seems surprised when an NFL head coach, voluntarily or not, packs it in earlier than expected.
