SEATTLE -- It looks like it could be weeks before there is a resolution in the case of suspended Washington football coach Rick Neuheisel.

He and his attorneys met Thursday with athletic director Barbara Hedges to plead their case that Neuheisel should keep his job. If Neuheisel isn't satisfied with the decision, he can appeal to a university vice president. But the person who would conduct that hearing is on vacation until the end of July, ESPN has learned.

After that, the case could go to court.

Hedges announced June 12 that Neuheisel would be fired for gambling on the past two NCAA basketball tournaments in violation of NCAA rules. In addition, Hedges said Neuheisel was not forthcoming when he was first questioned by NCAA investigators.

Neuheisel on Thursday attacked what he termed the ambiguity of NCAA rules barring gambling.

He also submitted letters of support from several prominent coaches at other schools, who said they rely on information from their schools' compliance officers to resolve questions about such matters.

Among the coaches writing in support were Oregon's Mike Bellotti, who has had past clashes with Neuheisel, Ohio State's Jim Tressel and Penn State's Joe Paterno.
