ATLANTA -- Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer was released from an Atlanta hospital on Wednesday after spending Tuesday night there with chest pains while vacationing with his family at his lakefront home near Atlanta.

"I feel pretty good, just getting things checked out," Beamer, 56, said Wednesday on The Dan Patrick Show on ESPN Radio.

Beamer began having chest pains Monday night, Virginia Tech director of football operations John Ballein said. The coach saw a doctor in the area and planned to fly home to be examined by his personal physician but was advised to go to the hospital instead.

A statement from the hospital, posted on Beamer's Web site, said Beamer underwent a coronary exam that showed no major blockages.

Beamer has had a history of heart trouble. Ballein recalled Beamer experiencing heart trouble during a 1989 game, a 14-10 Hokies' loss at East Carolina. Upon his return to Virginia, Beamer was examined at a local hospital.

He underwent an angioplasty procedure four days after that game. The procedure widened a nearly-closed artery, the Roanoke (Va.) Times reported. He missed the team's next game, a 30-13 victory over Tulane at Lane Stadium in Blacksburg.
