Can you imagine Bill Mazeroski announcing his retirement and no one caring? How about Franco Harris? It happened that way with Tom Barrasso last week. Shame on us.
The scant attention Barrasso's retirement received from media and fans was especially jarring during a week of hype and hysteria caused by the Penguins' selection of goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury as the No. 1 pick in the NHL Entry Draft. The scouts can talk all they want about the kid being the next Patrick Roy. The Penguins will be lucky if he turns out to be the next Barrasso. They would be thrilled if he leads them to one Stanley Cup let alone two.
