Rams wide receiver Torry Holt is back home in North Carolina, working out in preparation for the start of training camp next month. Meanwhile, Holt's agent, Greg Williams, continues to work on securing a new contract for his Pro Bowl client.

And even though Williams said he's had very little contact with the Rams since May, he's optimistic that a deal will be worked out before Holt hits the field in Macomb, Ill., on July 24. As it is, Holt is entering the last year of his original, four-year deal.

``We're hopeful that we can get something worked out for him pretty soon,'' Williams said Thursday. ``I feel pretty confident that we can. It's just a matter of getting it done.''

Williams and Rams president of football operations Jay Zygmunt first met to discuss a new contract for Holt in February at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. The two met again in March at the NFL Europe training camp in Orlando, Fla., and again in May in St. Louis during the team's full-squad minicamp.

In March, the Rams made an initial offer to Holt that was close to but slightly less than the seven-year, $42.1 million deal signed by Rams wide receiver Isaac Bruce prior to the 2000 season. Then, before sitting down with Williams in May, the team made a new offer that was basically identical to the Bruce contract.
