I just heard. I didn't believe it at first. It is the truth though. No more crazy old Oakland owner.

What a guy. "Track Suit, Slick back hair multi-millionare" who spit in the face of authority the entire way. Was not a huge fan of his antics myself but you have to respect a guy who stays true to himself until the very end.

RIP

Long Live the AFL!

I wonder if this means the Raiders will be able to get good again.

Al Davis was a HC in the AFL for the Raiders. To keep him, the owner at the time gave him a piece of the team. There is no other owner in the NFL that knows football like Davis did, he will be missed. Condolences to his family.

A true legend of the game, he will be missed. : ( He and Ralph Wilson have been long time friends since the days of the the old AFL. I imagine Ralph's heart is heavy over the news. We lost 2 icons in such a short period of time, Steve Jobs, and now Al Davis. I'm almost scared to ask what's next? What an awful week.

So who owns the team now? Does this make the LA move more likely?

RIP Al.

Bigger loss for the NFL than people might automatically think. Davis forgot more about football than the likes of Snyder, Kraft and Jones will ever know.

Seems an even bigger shame, when it appears his new HC is actually a good one.

Exactly. I found him to be the anti-Jerry Jones and Daniel Snyder. To those guys it's all about money, to Al Davis it was all about winning and the love of his team. One of the few elderly millionaires that could claim he was "keeping it real." (As much as I hate that phrase.)

The old bastard definitely rocked and we won't see his kind in big time pro sports ever again. :air:

? Not sure if sarcastic or really asking. Wilson is 92, Davis was 82.

Prayers go out to his family. With these owners, sometimes they seem invincible, like they'll never die. Very strange to see, and have to wonder if it makes Ralph Wilson think long and hard.

Thanks!

Can we ban this ass? Peddling stuff in a dead man's thread, not cool broseph.

RIP Al, though I didn't like you, and though your draft strategy of 'who could hold a candle to Usain Bolt' was annoying your fans, you truly were an integral part of the NFL of today.

Knowing that one piece other than a pawn is taken off the board, the rest are in jeopardy and must rethink their ways. With huge uncertainty that is who will take over, Ralph needs to pick a successor rather than the whole "I'm dead, who cares?" aspect.

Al Davis, his own ways and his antics, they will be missed. Again, RIP.

I'm sure there'll be a lot of cruel things said about him, but the man did a lot for the game of football. Without people like ALL DAVIS and RALPH WILSON, who knows where this league could of ended up, both were instrumental to the growth of the NFL. RIP AL DAVIS.

All that's left of the "foolish club" is Ralph Wilson and Bud Adams. Wow! That really sucks. :(

Al Davis was a true pioneer. The man told the NFL to **** off and never back up for a moment. And he delivered 3 championships in 8 years toi the silver n black

I did not know he has a Syracuse Grad until I looked up the Syracuse schedule today. Truley an Icon in his own way.

any word on the cause of death yet?

R.I.P. AL thank you for merging the AFL and NFL into one league

God needed an owner for the football team he is building. With all the old time NFL players that have passed away this year God must be building his own football team like Field of Dreams.

“I am deeply saddened with the news of the passing of Al Davis. Al and I were very good friends for many years and I admired his innovative approach to the game of football.”

“Al had a great impact on the American Football League that carried over to the National Football League after the merger and his competitive spirit embodied our sport.”

“Al’s Raiders may not have won every game, but you knew that you were in for a tough, hard-fought contest every time you played them, regardless of the score.”

”I want to extend my deepest sympathies to Al’s family, friends, the Raiders organization and Raiders fans everywhere.”

No. It's insinuating that it took a man to die for a team to get better.

Unfortunately, some times it does. I don't cheer death, but our system sometimes leaves it the only way to get corrupt people out of power. There needs to be other options for deposition.

Never knew much about Al Davis other than some of his wacky garb - the obligatory Raider 'hate' that we feel kinda blinded me to the positives out there.

His guys on the team clearly, however, LOVED him, and that's about the best epitaph a man can have. I gotta admit, I got choked up when I saw Hue Jackson crying on the sidelines at the end of the game. I was happy for that dramatic win for the Raiders and their fans.
