Totally Scientific Power Rankings: Week 6

Totally Scientific Power Rankings: Week 6

    by Dujek

So, week 6 of the NFL season is in the books, and we are down to one unbeaten time, last year's Super Bowl Champions, the Green Bay Packers.

Bills/AFC East watch: While the Bills lost, the fact that every team they have played up until now either won or was on a bye helped them to stay safely in the top 10 at 8th place. The Patriots move up into second following the Lions late loss to the 49ers, the Jets dropped a place despite beating the Dolphins, due to the fact it was only the Dolphins they beat, and the Dolphins fell again down to 30th.

Suck for Luck: The Colts are going to win the Andrew Luck sweepstakes, he'll get a few years to learn under Manning and then they'll be set up to win for years to come. Unfortunately.

This week, as well as giving you the team's rank, record and previous week's ranking I am going to include the points that the formula has awarded, simply to allow you to see where there are bunches of teams that have very little between them, and where there might be a big gap between two places in the rankings.

As ever, the rankings are completely scientific and free of personal bias.

    1. Green Bay Packers - 129.626 pts. (Record: 6-0) (Previous Week: 1)
    2. New England Patriots - 125.255 pts. (5-1) (3)
    3. Baltimore Ravens - 124.684 pts. (4-1) (4)
    4. Detroit Lions - 123.929 pts. (5-1) (2)
    5. San Francisco 49ers - 119.118 pts. (5-1) (7)
    6. New Orleans Saints - 112.477 pts. (4-2) (5)
    7. Oakland Raiders - 111.785 pts. (4-2) (12)
    8. Buffalo Bills - 111.164 pts. (4-2) (6)
    9. San Diego Chargers - 110.720 pts (4-1) (10)
    10. Houston Texans - 110.679 pts (3-3) (8)
    11. Dallas Cowboys - 109.810 pts (2-3) (9)
    12. Pittsburgh Steelers - 108.162 pts. (4-2) (13)
    13. Tennessee Titans - 106.929 pts. (3-2) (14)
    14. Cincinnati Bengals - 106.562 pts. (4-2) (15)

    20. Washington Redskins - 99.886 pts. (3-2) (11)
    21. Philadelphia Eagles - 94.251 pts. (2-4) (24)
    22. Cleveland Browns - 93.848 pts. (2-3) (21)
    23. Seattle Seahawks - 89.099 pts. (2-3) (23)
    24. Carolina Panthers - 87.487 pts. (1-5) (22)
    25. Denver Broncos - 84.557 pts. (1-4) (26)
    26. Minnesota Vikings - 83.727 pts. (1-5) (25)
    27. Kansas City Chiefs - 83.005 pts. (2-3) (27)
    28. Jacksonville Jaguars - 80.488 pts. (1-5) (28)
    29. St. Louis Rams - 77.080 pts. (0-6) (31)
    30. Miami Dolphins - 75.629 pts. (0-5) (29)
    31. Arizona Cardinals - 75.346 pts. (1-4) (30)
    32. Indianapolis Colts - 69.273 pts. (0-6) (32)

That's all for now folks, if you liked the inclusion of the points awarded by the formula let me know, and I'll keep them in future weeks.

I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?"
"Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet.
You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times."
    It was all
true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach.
He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can
mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.

Definitely works better with the records and previous week rankings in colour, especially with the points totals added in.

I'll sort that for next week...

Allow me to simplify this with KB's formula:

            a1b1 + a2b2 + a3b3 = |a| |b| cos

Faulty Science. It is RIDICULOUS to have the 4-2 FIRST PLACE Bucs at 15 behind the 3-3 Texans & 2-3 Cowboys.

Especially when you consider the Bucs 2 losses were an away game to S.F. & the Lions in the 1st game of the season.

The Bucs beat both Atlanta & New Orleans the other teams in their division that will fight it out for 2nd place to the Bucs.

I guarantee the Bucs have a better shot at the playoffs than the Cowboys do.

Seriously, get over the Bucs, they're an averge team at best, and they didn't just lose to the 49ers, they got utterly destroyed.

Buffalo beat Oakland by 3 at RWS, in Oakland the Raiders in all likelihood would have won.

There are 0.6 points between the two teams, which basically says if they meet on a neutral field 100 times Oakland would win 51 of those games. Hardly a massive slight to the Bills.

No, the Cowboys are an average team at best. Freeman is a much better QB than Romo & that will be proven over time.

Yes the Bucs got destroyed by the 49ers in S.F. but they came back the next week to beat the Saints, a team some picked to go to the Super Bowl.

The NFC South is the best Division in the NFC & the Bucs are in FIRST PLACE in that Division. They should be at least in the top 10.

Just for the Tampa Bay and Dallas comparison:

Common opponents AND location: Detroit - home and San Francisco - road

                            Tampa Bay: 0-2 PF 23 PA 75
                            Dallas: 1-1 PF 57 PA 58

Tampa's opponents average out at a .500 record, while the Cowboys have had one of the toughest schedules in the league, with NONE of the teams they have played holding a losing record.

Also affecting Tampa Bay's rating is the fact that they give up 40 yards a game more than they gain, while Dallas gain 102 yards per game more than they give up. Tampa Bay get extra points in the turnover category however, as they are +3 compared to the Cowboys at -2.

At the end of the day though, there are only 3 total points between them in the rankings, which again makes them very closely matched, and if they were playing in Tampa I would certainly pick the Buccs to win.

Also, I agree that the Cowboys are an average team. I would say that everyone from Oakland to Atlanta in the rankings are average teams and I wouldn't bet good money on any one of them beating any other, because it would be much too close to call.
