Usually it would seem that coming off of a bye week is a positive thing, per logical reasoning, but this year it is not.
Thus far in the season, teams coming off of the bye week are 3-9, a winning rate of 0.250. Now, we of course have to put these numbers into context, especially since it's mostly some of the worst teams in the league who have played coming off byes currently. Pending Baltimore's game against Jacksonville Monday, the teams who have played after bye weeks are currently 28-43, a win rate of 0.394. It's not a huge difference, especially given the sample size of games, but it's large enough to take notice.
Also something to be aware of is the rate at which they are scoring. In the games after each team's bye week, that team scored an average of 4.9 points fewer than their average points scored in the other games. Again, we need to put it into context. Only three teams scored more points than their per-game average after the bye week: Cleveland (L), Arizona (L), and Kansas City (W). The former two scored a combined 1.8 points more than their average, while Kansas City really skewed the numbers by scoring a whopping 12.6 points more than average. It should be noted that two of those TD's were interceptions for touchdowns, and Kansas City was the beneficiary of 6 total turnovers. They only managed to score two other TD's, despite four other turnovers. Not a good sign. On the other hand, four teams scored more than 7 points less than their per-game average in other contests.
I wanted to make this post so that people are aware of the trend around the league. Teams are not doing well coming off of their bye weeks, particularly their offensive production. Since that's something we rely on, I really hope Buffalo can buck this trend and put a lot of points on the board. But just because it's a bye week, don't assume Buffalo will fix a lot of things. Teams this year seem to be going backwards coming out of their byes, though I have no clue why.
And don't take this for an excuse thread. There's no excuses for a team to come out that flat after the bye. I'm hoping our team is a shining testament to good coaching next weekend.
