Spiller’s WR role evolving

With C.J. Spiller’s role at wideout continuing this week and possibly beyond, the bye week afforded the coaching staff to possibly come up with some additional plays for the speedy back turned receiver.
“Because we had a bye we’ll have a little more time and he’ll have more time to think about things and how to get him involved,” said Ryan Fitzpatrick of Spiller. ”I think just in general with the injuries and still not having guys back, his role is going to increase. I think that was inevitable with him being out there and having a little bit to build on with the catches and the routes that he ran. I think that was going to happen anyway.”
Spiller had a career-high five catches in Buffalo’s Week 6 game against the Giants.

LaCanfora says Stevie, Fred after Fitz

NFL Network reporter Jason LaCanfora was pretty detailed in his description of negotiations on an extension for Bills QB Ryan Fitzpatrick this weekend, and indicated that once his deal is done that Stevie Johnson and Fred Jackson are next.
Here’s what he said on the NFL Gameday show.
“It’s pretty close,” said LaCanfora on an extension deal for Fitzpatrick. ”It could well be before he plays his next game. He’s going to make around $10 million a year. They’ve made a lot of progress on this the last two weeks and no surprise here, things really kicked into overdrive when he beat the Patriots. That kind of got negotiations going again and they’ve been on a steady upward slant since then. Guaranteed money is still a little bit of a hold up, but the expectation on both sides was to get this done during the bye week. The Bills closed for business over the weekend, gave everyone a break, but they’ll pick it up again early this week and we could very well have this put to bed before next Sunday, which means Fred Jackson and Stevie Johnson then are back on the table. Those two were taken off the table until they got the quarterback done.”

Skins are beat up

The Bills needed a bye week to heal up and even with it won’t be completely healthy heading into Sunday’s game with Washington in Toronto. Neither will the Redskins after their loss Sunday to Carolina.
Washington has reportedly lost WR Santana Moss for 3-4 weeks with a fractured hand suffered in Sunday’s game. Starting RB Tim Hightower has reportedly sustained a torn ACL and if that’s confirmed he’ll be out for the season. He’s undergoing an MRI this morning for confirmation of the injury.
Washington MLB London Fletcher also suffered a hamstring injury in the second half of Sunday’s game and his status is up in the air. The Redskins lost TE Chris Cooley two weeks ago, though TE Fred Davis has played well for Washington.
With Hightower out the Redskins would presumably start Ryan Torain at running back this week against the Bills.

Great to hear Fitzy might be done soon. I do remember hearing that things won't be worked on until today, so hopefully they can put the finishing touches on soon.

I kind of wonder where Demetrius Bell fits in. Is he a part of their long-term plan? I wouldn't mind seeing him at RT if Hairston does eventually take over at LT.

Merriman not practicing

Bills LB Shawne Merriman said he was confident he’d be ready for this week’s game against Washington, but he’s not participating here on Monday.
Over the past few weeks Merriman has often been given Wednesdays off, so today’s practice off the bye week may be exactly that. We’ll get more from Coach Gailey after practice.

Levitre at left tackle

Bills LG Andy Levitre is back out at left tackle today.
Levitre would be the team’s starting left tackle Sunday if Demetrius Bell cannot return from a shoulder injury.
Bell is not practicing today and Chris Hairston is out 2-4 weeks with an ankle injury.

Report: Hightower has torn ACL

Rotoworld is reporting that Redskins starting RB Tim Hightower has a torn ACL saying it was confirmed by the team.
Hightower was carted off the field Sunday with a knee injury. Expected to take his place in the starting lineup Sunday against the Bills in Toronto is Ryan Torain, with Roy Helu as the backup.

Report: Skins Moss out 3 wks

The reports continue regarding the fractured hand sustained by Redskins WR Santana Moss.
According to ProFootballTalk, Moss will miss three weeks and undergo surgery for his broken hand suffered in the Washington loss to Carolina Sunday.
Without Moss Washington loses their top big play threat in the passing game. Buffalo had been vulnerable to big plays in the passing game giving up the fourth most pass plays of 25 yards or more in the league (14).

Limited progress for Merriman

Bills LB Shawne Merriman had said he was confident he’d be ready for Week 8 against Washington, but coming out of the bye week Merriman was not able to practice Monday. Head coach Chan Gailey provided an update on Merriman as he recovers from an Achilles flare up.
“He’s not making the progress we had hoped right now,” said Gailey. ”We’re going to try to work with him and see where it goes.”
Being that it’s only Monday Gailey would not rule Merriman out for Sunday’s game against the Redskins just yet.
“If we get to Wednesday or Thursday and things haven’t gotten a lot better then yeah we might have to rule him out for the game,” Gailey said.
Merriman missed Buffalo’s last game against the Giants.
