No NCAA violations found, but scrutiny lingers

Washington's athletic department received a passing grade for compliance with NCAA regulations in the most recent internal state audit on April 11, only two months before the department's compliance office would play an embarrassing roll in the Rick Neuheisel controversy, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported Saturday.

The newspaper requested the annual audit of the athletic department for 2001-02, which is a public record. No NCAA violations were found, though the review does not focus on finding misconduct, according to athletic director Barbara Hedges.

However, the audit noted: Recruiting materials distributed by the Huskies' football and men's basketball programs to prospective athletes were not monitored or reviewed adequately; the athletic department's summer jobs program was insufficiently monitored in the cases of two part-time employees; and the payroll department "does not have established procedures for ensuring that overtime and leave are properly authorized and documented, resulting in inconsistencies."

Despite these shortcomings, the audit concluded the athletic department "has sufficient internal controls over recruiting, student-athlete employment and graduation rates."

"I would say it's not perfect but it's pretty good," Hedges told the Post-Intelligencer. "We still have some things to work on. That's the way things always are."
