Experiment over.

I saw rumors that Kyle Williams might be done for the year too. Too bad for Merriman, but it seemed inevitable. Let's just hope the extra time helps our young OLB's and we can find someone to rush the passer this offseason.

Malingering again. The bum just wants a check.

Not surprised, but also not upset that the Bills gave it a shot. It was a low-risk, high reward move that just doesn't look like it's going to work out.

Malingering again. The bum just wants a check.

Doubtful.

His contract has a split rate and his salary drops to $500K while on IR. His salary was $2.75M for the first 7 weeks.

Now his weekly pay drops from $161,765 to $29.412. Over the final 10 weeks of the season he will make about $1.324M less than what he would have. I doubt he would malinger when it costs him that much money. Last thing he wanted was to go on IR.

Antonio Coleman has been signed to the active roster from the Giants PS, according to NFL_realupdates on Twitter. Reliable source from my experience.

This really is a shame. You guys complain all you want about Merriman not making noticeable plays, but the guy was a big force on our defense. Very bad news.

Absent force is more accurate. You do realize that we need players that make the field & a difference, not just their name right ?

I don't know what games you were watching if you didn't see him making a difference.

9 tackles & 1 sack, what a difference maker. He probably still leads the team in sacks.

He's played in 8 games in the last 2 years, 1 sack & 15 tackles in that span.

i think the pass rush is day and night with and without him. you saw eli have weeks to pass near the end of the game. even with merriman simply in the rotation, the bills forced plays more.

Horrible loss for the Bills. The Bills defense ranks as the NFL's overall worst defense. Merriman may or may not lead the Bills in total sacks, with 1. But then again, who knows when Buffalo ranks dead last in sacks... With only 4. Maybin has 3 himself and in only 4 weeks, he leads the league in forced fumbles. Buffalo took a gamle on an often injured Merriman, and ended up paying the price on the defensive side of the ball.

Moats time!

Seriously though it's absolutely obscene and insulting to the Bills fan base that Buddy Nix failed to address the OLB position this past offseason. Really? We're putting all our faith in I.R. Merriman? It's been the weak point two years in a row and Buddy's done nothing but 6th rounders Batten and Moats. Inexcusable.

He made quite a few plays by not making them. Sounds counter-intuitive, but he would force guys back inside and they would get stopped by someone else.

Saw this plenty of times.

Very disappointing, very upsetting, but good riddance to bad joints and muscles. I'm not even mad at whatsisname Moran anymore, but I truly hope he makes a good recovery somewhere else. I'm sick of getting my hopes up with this guy, so I can't wait to see what happens with Moats and Batten.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/10/25/merriman-says-hell-have-surgery-on-his-achilles-tendon/

Seems like a sensible move.
I'd not rush to write him off just yet.
I don't want the FO to plan for life with him, due to how many injuries he's had, but I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him come back next year, assuming the surgery goes ok, and actually have an impact.
One thing I will say about Merriman, is that I've always got the impression he wants to play the game, and he still actually has some time on his side.

For whatever it's worth, Merriman seemed like a vocal leader on game day to get everyone pumped up. He was the dude in the middle of the huddle getting the D fired up in every NFL Replay I saw where they show it. Also he helped recruit Barnett amongst others and was a good supporter of the Bills. Publicly said all the right things too.

Like I said, for whatever it's worth though.

Are the Bills really going to waste their time and another year on this guy? I say get a settlement and let him go on his merri way.

Takeo Spikes had surgery on a ruptured achilles tendon years ago and is still playing.

Merriman can come back in better shape than he was in at the beginning of this season.

I hope they give him another shot next year.

Would be interested to see a reaction from him, especially considering the details of the pay cut he just took.

http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q263/JoeMama025/6tp9gi.gifThat game gave some of us a glimmer of hope that he would return to the Merriman of old. Now he's just old Merriman. Joking aside. I think Merriman should give serious thought to hanging it up, call it a career. He might end up having to walk with a cane for the rest of his life if he doesn't. Obviously that Achilles injury is a pretty serious thing.

maybe there was an issue with the previous injury this surgery could fix that issue...who knows but he is a buffalo bill idk why people are hating on him so much

However, those of us who just hoped he would be back to the old Merriman are just reflecting at the disappointment which is a little different than hating. JMO

this is a shame and has made our defense worse for this season

hopefully he actually comes back next year

however OLB is now a major need in the first few rounds next year in the draft

There goes the season. Another round of missed playoffs, here we come. Shawne, I hope you're happy, because you've just screwed a million Bills fans out of a serious chance at breaking what is about to become a 12-year playoff drought.

Heck, even Detroit's on pace to make the playoffs.
