Ryan Fitzpatrick’s Wonderlic score: What does it mean?

It was the second-highest score ever recorded by an NFL player on the 50-point test (trailing only the perfect 50 earned by fellow Harvard alum and former Cincinnati Bengal Pat McInally in 1975). It trumps the highly respectable 30 tallied by Redskins quarterback John Beck, the 29 earned by Rex Grossman, and the societal average of about 20.3 — which represents an IQ of about 100.

It means he's smarter then you and he can understand and read defenses, thus the reason he can play in the NFL.

Not really, its just a general knowledge test.

Just like in real life with normal people, some test well some don't. The scores are basically meaningless.

too bad this doesn't keep him from underthrowing Stevie Johnson. I'd trade some of those IQ points and put it towards his accuracy rating.

Ultra high Wonderlic scores generally don't mean additional success in the NFL.

However, significantly lower than average Wonderlic scores are never a good sign for QB's.

That might be true if they gave you all day to do it. But they don't. There is enough time to complete the test if you can think quickly and remain calm, you know sort of the way a QB has to think when he drops back to pass. I think OP has it about right.

Again it means nothing, there are examples players scoring high and doing poorly and players scoring low and doing well. Teams barely even have them register.

The wonderlic score is almost all media hysteria and fan scrutiny. Im assuming you have all take the sample test right? We had one posted a few years back.

No they give it for a reason. Trust me you're not smarter than the league on this, they know what they're doing and you don't. Sorry. Saying there's examples that were not indictative is not meaningful, sort of like saying I smoked for 40 years and didn't get cancer. It's one of dozens of tools teams use to evaluate players, noone uses it in a vaccum.

It's like when Vince Young came out and his first try scored single digits. I considered that a red flag. Turns out he is what what we thought he was, dumb.
