Buffalo Bills nose tackle Kyle Williams' injured foot will get at least a few more games of rest before a final determination will be made on his status for the rest of the season, according to a league source.

The local news yesterday insinuated that he may indeed be done for the year, with his foot not getting any better and it may need to be looked at further for surgery.

Speculation naturally.. but I wouldn't be surprised.

Well if we are going to lose a starting WR , LB, and DT, you can kiss the playoffs goodbye.

This is a killer for the defense. Our best player and really the only impact player is done.
Now that the offense is producing and is playoff calibre, it might be time to look at a couple of free agents on defense to give us the playoff push. And yes, I'm talking about next year.
The Jets are getting things together and are going to finish second in the division. The Bills will not make the playoffs this year.....just a prediction, but it looks likely to me.

Get this thing going!

Troup has made a huge impact and has been getting better game by game. In terms of his play this YEAR Kyle doesn't sniff George, Barnett, and Dareus jock. Byrd and Kelsay have also been better than him. I love Kyle but he's clearly not himself, the defense wont get dramatically worse.

I don't think Troup's played that well at all in his young career. Certainly don't see him really getting "better and better." Having said that, he has been bothered by injuries so maybe if he's healthy Toupe will be a good player for us but unfortunately he's been hampered by injuries in his short career. He absolutely NEEDS to get healthy and he absolutely NEEDS to step up in KW's absence.

Hopefully Heard and Troupe can at least be solid at the nose and Dareus can step up and become a more disruptive force.

It's true, Kyle has been playing hurt all year and as a result he hasn't looked like himself. I didn't realize it was so serious though. I was originally expecting Kyle to just take 2-3 weeks off and be able to return at 100% and provide the boost this defense needs to show some improvement.

Heh. His last gig was in CIN. Wasn't active until game 5 (out of shape - no surprise there...they were worried about a heart attack on the field is my guess).

When he played, though, he was vintage Sam - quick as a cat off the snap and got a double teaming constantly. Amazing athlete.

I recall somebody once describing him as a pass-rushing linebacker who happened to be built like a rhinoceros.

I'll never understand why BUF gave him the boot.

Well to be fair, when the Bills made the switch, they didn't really have any good parts for a 4-3 either.

Schobel retired, so we lost our pass rushing DE. Stroud just got old and wasn't good enough for any defense. Maybin wasn't a fit in the 4-3. Keith Ellison needed to be replaced. If we were going to make a change, after the 2009 season was the year to do it.

The problem is, that it's more difficult to staff up a 3-4 front seven than a 4-3. You have decent chances to draft/buy the DEs and the LBs, but getting that NT is the tough thing. And you need two of 'em, and hope that the bench guy can step in, in case.

And generally, with a 3 -4 you tend to carry one less DL. Which can be a problem if you have to revert to a 4-3 and have tailored your OLBs to play in a 3-4.

Bottom line: if you run a 3-4, be sure to expend a LOT of practice time on DL versatility. Get the big LBs trained, even this or that wide-body OL.

If your NT and back-up can't do it or go you need a solid Plan B.

Williams is a loss, but Jones might be back this week and Merriman wasn't having much impact anyway. Kelsay is back this week too. Can we hold off kissing the playoffs goodbye for a few weeks?

I don't know, I think it's easier to find LB's then D-lineman. And I think 4-3 DE's are harder to find then NT's.

Gregg Williams gave him the boot because he didn't think he fit his defense. Williams is an IDIOT that RUINED a VERY GOOD DEFENSE when he should have concentrated on fixing a bad offense.

I think if this team were 0-6 it would be a different story, but with a chance to compete for a playoff spot they are going to give Williams every opportunity to play again this year.

Even if they have to rest him for all of November, if there's a chance he could contribute in December it's worth it to them to keep him off IR.

I think he only goes on IR if they determine that his only option is surgery because his foot can't heal without it.

Yes - but we can't forget that he is taking up a roster spot. That matters. But as you imply - they are 4 and 2 and who figured on that?

It's a coin flip that the BUF staff has to call.

Troup is also dealing with a nagging injury issue (tightness in his back) that has prevented him from being effective. No way to know when or if he'll get better either.

As far as Williams is concerned, it was reported by a poster on the official Bills message board that he had bone spurs. I did not mention it earlier because there was no link or source mentioned, but it actually does make some sense, and on the other side of it no one seemed to question that report. Bone spurs on the bottom of the foot (usually on the heel) will cause inflamation of the soft tissue that makes it painful to walk, let alone push off the way a nose tackle needs to do. He's been wearing a special boot, presumably (if the bone spur report is correct) to keep weight off the area where the bone spurs are found in order to allow the inflamation of the soft tissue to calm down. The problem is (as anyone who as ever had plantar fasciitis knows) inflamation in that area of the foot is painfully (pun intended) slow to subside, and will get reaggravated as soon as he starts putting weight on it again. Even if Williams does get on the field again this season, I can't see him being very effective as there will be a constant battle with inflamation and the pain it causes. I'd say he's better off to go ahead and have the surgery so it can get healed up for good.

Yeah he is, but even if they put him on IR and brought up another DT from the practice squad, that player is still most likely going to be inactive on game day. What will push them to place Williams on IR is if we suffer any additional injuries at the position. They have enough D-lineman at the moment though, to keep Williams inactive.

How long does it take to recover from surgery? I would think removing bone spurs is a pretty simple procedure that would just require the incision healing. It's not like you're talking about a broken bone, or damaged ligament or tendon.

I wish I knew. I'm not a real doctor. I only play one on TV. No, I think that's someone else's line. In any case, I've had plantar fasciitis, that some people mislabel as bone spurs. That is inflamation of the fascia only (a band or "strap" of connective tissue that attaches to the heel and the front area of the foot. Without treatment that can take 2-3 years to heal up on its own as did one foot. Later when I developed it in the other foot, I asked my doctor. He gave me some exercises to stretch the ligaments and connective tissue in the foot and had me take 600-800 mg of ibuprofen 4 times a day for a month. It cleared up in a couple months. The inflamation is probably pretty similar. In addition there is the time it takes for the incision and any soft tissue traumatized in the surgery to heal. There is also the possibility of cortisone shots in the area where the inflamation is. They might speed recovery, but I'm not sure that league drug policies would allow those since they do enter the blood stream and would be detected on any test for 'roids.

Well, with Brad Smith as the #3 QB the Bills have an extra roster spot a conventional QB would normally take up so maybe the Bills can afford to let Williams rest a while.
