Report: Bills likely to extend Lindell and Pears before Freddy

With Ryan Fitzpatrick signed long-term, the next two Buffalo Bills players likely to get new contracts are RT Erik Pears and K Rian Lindell, per a WGR 550 report.

Report: Buffalo Bills Seeking Deals For Erik Pears, Rian Lindell

WGR 550 in Buffalo is reporting that with quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick locked up long-term, the Buffalo Bills are now seeking contract extensions for two veteran players in the final year of their respective deals: right tackle Erik Pears and kicker Rian Lindell.

The report also suggests that contract talks with wideout Stevie Johnson - easily the team's most important looming free agent - have not taken place recently, and may not again until after the 2011 season concludes. A deal for Fred Jackson also appears possible (if not likely), but with Jackson already under contract for 2012, Pears and Lindell will get priority.

Pears took over as the team's starting right tackle late in 2010 and has held the position through this season. He has been a steady and mistake-free performer, and as he's still just 29 years old, it makes sense to lock him down for future seasons - especially with Chris Hairston focused on the left side.

Lindell, meanwhile, will be 35 in January, but continues to kick well, connecting on 12-of-14 field goal attempts this season. Already in his ninth year with Buffalo, if he does get a contract extension, he'll likely finish his career with this franchise.

Buffalo Bills running back Fred Jackson(notes) has rushed for 721 yards and six touchdowns this season for his 5-2 team and has been saying that he'd like a new contract. After all, the guy is being paid $1.25 million this year for a season in which he may end up breaking O.J. Simpson's team record for total yards from scrimmage.

The word from WGR 550 radio in Buffalo is that Jackson and Bills general manager Buddy Nix have had a face-to-face meeting this season that was a "healthy one" and had Jackson "confident that a deal would get done."

The Bills are first planning to take care of giving contracts to two players who don't have them for next season -- kicker Rian Lindell(notes) and right tackle Erik Pears(notes) - before dealing with the 30-year-old Jackson's extension, WGR reports.

Easier contracts to negotiate, I'm sure.

Two important guys to sign. Before the season started, everyone was saying how bad the Bills OL would be. I said Chan liked Pears at the time, looks like Chan was right about him.

Franchise tag SJ and then negotiate long term............why people have any issues with this strategy is beyond me.

Stevie isn't going anywhere. The Bills hold all the power. They can franchise him, if they have to. He shouldn't be the top priority.

I used to despise Lindell, but he's turned out to be possibly the best kicker in franchise history. It takes a very good demeanor and leg to kick at the Ralph.

Pears has been solid, he should be easy to re-sign.

Locking Fitz up was the key. Fred is under contract for another year and they obviously have no problem franchising Steve Johnson.

I understand why they want to extend Pears instead of Bell (less money and better at staying healthy), but while Pears has done a solid job at RT, I think Bell could be elite there if he could stay on the field.

At this point it seems that Bell isn't in Buffalo's long-term plans, which is too bad, IMO.

In the end, there's a route I'd prefer over the one they're taking, but right now I don't really have a problem with it. They'll keep everyone important outside of Bell. And depending on how contract negotiations go during the season, they may still have time after the season to lock him up too, if they are interested at all.

Yeah definitely should resign Pears now for cheap before anyone realizes he's pretty good. I'm sure Lindell won't be making any more money than he already is so that probably won't take long to get done.

The chances of Bell ever being elite are about as good as him ever playing an entire season. Not likely.

Didn't he start all 16 games last year? I don't think he'll ever be an "elite" LT, but I'm just sayin...

At RT? I'd love to see him there and think he could be quite dominant if he keeps up his play from before the injury. Not sure there would be many RT's as good as him, JMO.

I'm convinced Fitz is his own best friend when it comes to pass protection. Most other QBs would have been sacked 2x the amount he has. Our oline, IMO, has done a good job, not great.
