Santaluces and Mississippi State grad gets a chance with Dolphins

DAVIE -- A few minutes after Korey Banks left the field, just moments after Dave Wannstedt told the media to "keep an eye" on the free-agent cornerback from Boynton Beach, coach Bob Larson couldn't understand why the success of an undrafted free agent from Mississippi State via Garden City Community College would be a surprise.

Larson, sitting in his Garden City office, located in the southwest corner of Kansas, let loose a laugh.

"This is why Korey Banks was born," said Larson, who has coached at Garden City the past 10 years. "He was born to play football. He's got the ability. He's got the skills you get paid to play for in the NFL."

Testimony on his behalf does not change sentence

MIAMI -- A Broward County circuit judge has re-sentenced former Miami Dolphins running back Cecil Collins to 15 years in prison, two months after a state appeals court had thrown out a similar sentence.

Broward Circuit Judge Dorian Damoorgian handed down the maximum sentence to Collins on Friday. Collins was convicted of burglary for sneaking into his neighbors' apartment in an early morning break-in in December 1999.

In March, a state appeals court threw out the original 15-year sentence Collins was given by Broward County Judge Joyce Julian in his burglary trial. The appeals court argued that Julian didn't give Collins' relatives a chance to testify on his behalf.

        When NFL's clock runs out

Jamie Nails couldn't believe his career might be over.

After earning more than $1 million in four NFL seasons, the offensive lineman found himself out of football, released by the Dolphins during the 2001 preseason. With no other teams showing interest, Nails was in a world that many pro athletes aren't prepared to visit.

        The real world.

Dolphins defensive end is a Neutrogena man

Jason Taylor has sacked a major promotional gig.

Taylor, the 28-year-old Miami Dolphins defensive end from Akron who led the NFL with 18.5 sacks last season, has been named the first spokesman for the Neutrogena Men brand. Neutrogena makes skin, hair and body-care products.

Taylor has had a busy offseason.

He's already been to Germany to visit troops and to Kuwait during his latest USO tour. Two weeks ago, he made his most interesting stop: Baghdad, going through Saddam International Airport.

Dolphins' David Bowens to miss months after ladder mishap

David Bowens, an energetic pass-rushing end expected to be part of the defensive line rotation, tore an anterior cruciate ligament earlier this week and likely is lost to the Dolphins until at least November.

Harold Lewis, Bowens' agent, said Friday that his client injured his knee Monday when he jumped off a ladder and came down awkwardly after changing a light bulb in his house.

            Bowens did not return calls.
