Re: top 20 goal scorers the last 4 years

tied for 45 in career goals for active players (47)

among those players, only two started the same year he did (Crosby and Ovechkin) and nobody started after

    Looks pretty good

      Can you?

Seriously, I'd like to know who they are and how good they are. I don't pay much attention to the WC as the Sabres only play each team 1x a year.

The fan base would have *****ED up a storm if we let Vanek go. Obviously hindsight is 20/20 but really with the way drafts go these days how is ANY player worth more than a ton of first rounders?

See, this is revisionist history. Technically, it's true that the fan base would have revolted, HOWEVER, if the FO had managed to retain Briere and/or Drury, losing Vanek wouldn't have been a big deal. It certainly wouldn't have been as bad as losing Briere AND Drury after two consecutive trips to the conf finals.

Edmonton wouldn't have finished that bad with Vanek and the draft picks would've been completely different players.

Gotta call B.S. on this one. I don't believe that for a second.

It certainly has merit though. Nobody could know, then or now, that Edmonton would have 4 consecutive picks at the top of the draft. Nobody could expect that.

And no one knew that Drury would play like **** while Briere would still be good and Vanek would be decent at the time either.

If you went back in time to 4 years ago and told Sabres fans "Vanek, Briere, Drury- we only have enough money to keep two of the 3," Vanek would be the odd man out every time. If we had kept either Briere or Drury, people would have gotten over the loss of Vanek, especially since we got NOTHING for losing Briere or Drury and we would have at least gotten 4 picks for Vanek.

In hindsight, the smart move would have been to pay Briere and let Drury and Vanek walk for the 4 picks. Obviously, the FO didn't have the benefit of hindsight in the moment, but they are also hockey professionals and get paid big money to be able to make the right calls in situations like this.

Well yeah, but even in hindsight, we had already lost Drury and Briere about a week before Vanek got his offer sheet. So, there wasn't really a choice.

Well, the choice should have been to lock up either Drury or Briere before that situation became a problem. To sit there and say "the fans would have rioted if we let Vanek walk" is incomplete: the reason the fans would have rioted isn't just Vanek- it's because we already lost our two best players a week before.

At the end of the day, the FO botched the situation, and before Thurm says "WHO CARES? THEY ARE GONE GET OVER IT!" the reality is that this team is still feeling the effects of that decision.

I don't know if they're "still feeling the effects", but I agree the FO botched that. They said publicly that they wanted Drury and waited for him when free agency started. Problem was they had already pissed him off and screwed him, so when he had the opportunity to screw them back, he did.

Losing Vanek wasn't an option after that IMO.

you mean the guy who scored 47 points his first season with EDM? penner is a bum.

hemsky would've been better than under a PPG with vanek on his line and there's no way edmonton would have finished in the same place.

you're right 17 point difference is completely irrelevant!

A scorer like Vanek with Hemsky on his line would've put up more than 64 points, too.

you're an idiot if you think adding a 40 goal scorer would have no impact on where a team finishes.

for all either of us know edmonton could've been a fringe playoff team with vanek, which would have changed those draft picks completely.

you're arguing something that can't be proven either way. you just can't sit here and say the players those picks turned into would've been sabres, because its just flat-out not true.
