Among the many unpopular figures in the Buffalo Bills (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/buffalo-bills) organization at the moment, none has been the recipient of more fan vitriol than defensive coordinator George Edwards. The reasons should be obvious: Buffalo's defense has largely been terrible this season, and the team has an experienced defensive play-caller in Dave Wannstedt already on the coaching staff.
Despite daily calls for Edwards' firing from the fan base, Bills fans need to come to grips with the fact that it's not going to happen for a while - if at all.
First and foremost, despite the general sentiment of the team right now, the Bills are still only a game out of the Wild Card spot in the AFC. NFL teams don't make drastic changes with coordinators or play-callers when they're fighting for the playoffs - and if you don't think firing a guy in favor of another already on the coaching staff is a big deal, think back to the Turk Schonert-for-Alex Van Pelt swap at offensive coordinator in 2009. If praying will do the job, I may start myself.

I don't think replacing Edwards with Wannstedt at this point compares in anyway to AVP replacing Schonert right before the 09 season. Wannstedt is an actual experienced DC and the Bills D can't play much worse right now.

It can under Wannstadt.

Comparing this, to the schonert/van pelt situation is ******ed. you would be going from a less experienced coach to a more experienced coach. not the other way around. whoever wrote this is dumb.

I think a monkey with no eyes could do a better job.

Are you saying the defense would get worse under Wannstedt? I doubt it, but if that's true, I'd rather find that out now so we can get rid of both of them. No point in spending the rest of the year having George Edwards prove he can't run a defense. Might as well see if Wannstedt can provide some kind of hope, and if he fails keep looking.

I think Edwards plays a bigger part of us being terrible on D then most think. Lets take Maybin for example. I know Edwards was not here for the whole Maybin debacle. But people say its not caoching its the players. Maybin was a complete waste while here under our coaches ZERO production. The Jets were able to get some production from him however limited it was. So yeah Edwards should go. IMO

Gailey wont fire Edwards. But, I wonder if maybe he shouldn't just get demoted to a lower level position on the staff if there is such a thing.

Of all the things to pray for, this is what you waste it on?!?!?

ok just to clarify- PW wants to get rid of Edwards OR fire him. If Gailey won't fire him is he recommending we take him out?

Let me be clear - I am in no way defending Edwards. I do not believe that he is a great defensive coordinator. There. Now, I do think that a lot of the hate toward Edwards is misplaced. He deserves some blame, but not as much as he's getting.

Yes, we switched to a 34. The 43 versions of defense we ran weren't exactly working under any former coaches. In fact many on this very board were screaming to go back to a 34. We do not have all the parts to successfully run a 34. Problem is we have even fewer 43 parts. It's an organizational problem. We suck, we change, we don't put the pieces in place, we suck, we change...

Right now, Williams and Dareus could successfully play in a 43. Johnson could rotate in. That's about it. Edwards, Carrington, et al are 34 DE's. We have zero 43 OLB's and mediocre 34 OLB's. We have one 34 ILB who could play in a 43 albeit less effectively. On the outside, we put it all on Merriman and the house won. We have no true edge rusher at all. Kelsay WAS a mediocre 43 DE and we made him lose 20 lbs to become an un-athletic 34 OLB. He works hard though. We have decent safeties. Our corners are good zone corners, but struggle man-up. Florence is better in the slot, but we have consistently placed him on the outside out of desperation. He's not good on the outside. McGee is good in run support, but not good man-up down field. McKelvin is excellent in keeping up with guys down field and has excellent breaking speed when he sees the ball, but he loses the ball in the air if his back is to the line of scrimmage.

Wannstache is a 43 guy, historically, but we want him to save the day. Not gonna happen. Nobody makes this defense stellar except a few more good players. I think K. Shep could possibly grow, maybe Williams becomes a staple in the secondary, but it's too early to say. We still need to draft and/or an edge rusher. We also need a lot of help on the offensive side of the ball. I liked last years draft, but we need more talent. The Bills biggest problem is team talent. We lack that.

Edwards is certainly part of the problem, but there are a whole lot of other parts that I think are bigger problems. Talent and Ralph being the top two.

Well, that would be the sure way the Bills don't have a change of heart & rehire him.

Maybe he'll just quit.

He should quit. His scheme sucks. His playcalling sucks. His players don't know how to blitz properly. That's all on him. He's the worst D.C. this team has had in a long time, and that's saying A LOT.

Are you saying the defense would get worse under Wannstedt?

Yes...it already has with his 'input', and he was never any good to begin with.
