its that time of year again....

rumors are starting to swirl that the sabres are interested in acquiring bobby ryan from the ducks. hockeybuzz.com says the price tag could include drew stafford and a top level prospects.

Again, just rumors... but i'm curious to hear thoughts on Ryan as a player since i don't follow the west too much. someone we should be hoping to bring in?

If it's on hockeybuzz it means it won't happen

Also, Bobby Ryan for Drew Stafford? Apparently Al Davis faked his death and took a job working in the Ducks' FO.

They are trying to cut salary....I BELIEVE Ryan is making 5.5 and Stafford is at 4 but Sabres are up against the cap so I don't know how they will swing it.

Move someone else. Honestly, we just brought up a slew of Rochester guys who outplayed the regulars. If we got Bobby Ryan and moved someone else to save salary and replaced him with someone cheaper from Rochester, we'd be better off.

Who, specifically? Take your pick. Most of this team is playing like garbage.

yeah we'd have to move a player to a 3rd team and pick p some prospects.

Anyone need some soft, mediocre forwards for their Stanley Cup run?

Miller and Stafford to Ducks for Ryan and Hiller

Ducks can then trade Stafford to a 3rd team for picks and/or prospects

Anaheim wouldn't touch this, ever.

In addition to getting worse players overall, they take on more salary.

Here is what we know-

Ryan is somewhat pricey with a huge upside (Better than Vanek) but is under-performing

Miller now has a wife based in California, of to a slow start and makes $1 million more($6.2 M) than Ryan ($5.1 M)

Tons of scouts at recent Sabres games

The reality in Buffalo- Miller isn't going anywhere if Pegula wants a Cup. Miller has stated he likes Buffalo and isn't asking out or is disgruntled. You need a top flight goalie to win a cup.

The reality in Anaheim- With Boudreau, the Ducks are going to start free-wheeling a bit more on offense and need scorers. However, they also realize that Temu Selane and Saku Koivu won't be around next year and their cupboard is somewhat bare when it comes to prospects. With Boudreau- it comes down to his decision if he wants to keep him or deal him for more talent for next year.

I can see the Sabres wanting in on Bobby Ryan- I would be interested too. But you would see a couple big young names involved going the other way. If I were Anaheim I'd want Luke Adam and Tyler Myers. The other options being a mix of 3-4 players/prospects like Gerbe, Stafford, Kassian, Roy, Ennis, Gragiani

Right now almost all of our top forward prospects are with the club due to injuries- that's why the entire NHL scouting community is flocking here. It would be the case even if we didn't have any trade rumors. Scouts are eying these guys vs NHL caliber talent and making notes.

I would go after Ryan pretty hard but not mortgage the future for him. Plus, we can't afford to deal off too many centers. The good thing about Ryan is he can play all 3 forward spots

The other big reason this doesn't work- Jonas Hiller makes $4.5 million. Anaheim isn't going to carry $10.6 million in goalies. The Sabres are not going to take on Both Bobby Ryan and Jonas Hiller's contract. It only works if we trade off a lot of other guys.

We would have to shed a lot of parts to do this- and in the end we become what Anaheim is already- expensive with a lot of money in only a couple of guys.
