QB-Fitzpatrick/DP OR FA/B.Smith (3)

Fitz is here for '12, Thigpen sucks, Smith is OK for emergency which we might never need because Ryan seems to be able to stay healthy. Need another young guy for the practice squad, though, also.

RB-Jackson/Spiller/Choice (3)

Jackson should be re-signed. Choice has earned a shot on the roster. DO NOT waste yet another draft pick on a RB that'll never see the field let alone produce. These three guys should give us a pretty good mix.

FB-McIntyre (1)

Gotta have one...bring an UDFA into camp just for giggles.

WR-Stevie/DP OR FA/Nelson/Roosevelt/Aiken or Easley/(Smith) (5)

Sign Stevie. Use a high pick or some cash in FA to get a #2. Nelson is more than solid, Rosie adequate depth. Rooting for Aiken, who knows if Easley will even be able to play again, ever. I've had enough of ChinaDoll Parrish and WhoTheHellIs Jones to last me a lifetime. Ruvell Martin also, ST's be damned.

TE-Chandler/Caussin/Pianalto (3)

Chandler has proven his worth, Pianalto is still a sleeper. With the extra o-line below, we really don't need a pure blocker taking one of these spots.

T-Hairston/Pears/DP OR FA/Young (4)

Bell sucks. Goodbye. Hairston is probably the LT of the future and the team likes Pears for some reason. Wouldn't break my heart if we acquired an honest-to-god LT and moved Hairston to RT, let Pears be a swing back-up.

G-Levitre/Urbick/Rhinehart (3)

Probably the most solid component of the o-line.

C-Wood/DP OR FA (2)Urbick has done better than expected the last couple of weeks, but PLEASE for chrissakes get a REAL back-up center in here that can slide to guard if necessary. One of the damn dumbest things an offense can do is start shuffling starters around to make up for injuries and weakening two or three spots along the line, instead of just one.

DE-Dareus/Carrington/Edwards/Johnson (4)

No more playing DE's at OLB, dumbass. These guys are DE's and should stay there. I still believe our d-line is solid enough to stand pat, but if we were able to snag a stud pass rusher to take Edward's or Johnson's spot on the roster it certainly wouldn't break my heart.

DT-Williams/Heard/Troup (3)

Dareus obviously can play here also. Troup needs to get healthy, Heard is OK depth but again I wouldn't be against getting a true NT and replacing either one of those or moving Williams out to end.

OLB-Merriman/Kelsay/DP OR FA/Batten (4)

Yes, Merriman is fragile and Kelsay isn't the greatest, but the guys we've got now aren't going to make the move over them and you've got to have bodies. Bring in a new guy to eventually start. Batten only holds on because of numbers and Moats is disappearing fast. We could actually use two new faces on the outside.

ILB-Barnett/Sheppard/DP OR FA/DP OR FA (4)LBer is our weakest spot. Another inside guy plus one versatile back up we can plant anywhere are necessary. Chris White might take one of the spots simply because of special teams.

CB-Willaims/Florence/DP OR FA/Rogers/DP OR FA (5)Williams is a keeper. Florence we'll have to live with another season. McGee and McKelvin are gone. Rogers is OK depth. A first- or second-rounder, plus a FA or later pick for depth would be ideal. This unit needs an overhaul almost as badly as, if not worse than, the LBers.

SS-Wilson/Searcy/Scott (3)

The leader, the future starter and a versatile back-up. Nuff said.

FS-Byrd/DP OR FA (2)Byrd's been coming on, especially in run support. A vet FA back up on his last legs or a rookie wouldn't hurt.

K-Lindell (1)
P-Moorman (1)
LS-Sanborn (1)

Pretty obvious for the ST's, no need for changes unless Lindell breaks a couple of more limbs or Sanborn becomes too expensive.

That's 52 spots, with 10 new bodies, and one open slot for somebody to slide into because of a training camp or preseason injury. A big fear is Chan's love affair with Roscoe and he'll stick. I could live with that, I suppose, as long as he's restricted to returning kicks, only used at wide out sparingly, and we have a couple of guys on the PS to replace him when he gets hurt yet again. I'm still rooting for Jasper to find a spot somewhere.

And, of course, a new defensive coordinator.

We need an OLB and the heir apparent at QB in the worst way. Get those two and a RT and let the young guys grow and we'll be on the right track.

I wouldn't be surprised if Rayner sticks at this point. I know I've said before that it's a long shot, but he's been very good for the Bills so far and hasn't missed a field goal yet (and in fact has hit a couple 50 yarders); the only bad kick he had was that one kickoff last week.

I think Rayner actually missed his first attempt as a Bill.

He kicked it about a mile to the left.

Johnny Bugmenot

Meh, it's the kicker. Not a big deal who does it, as long as someone does-- and does it well enough not to screw the team over. In either case, the position is pretty much set, and there are far more important holes to fill, perhaps more than can realistically be filled.

If we can stay healthy, then re-sign Chandler because we haven't had a legit TE in years. Re-sign our lineman who can block, let Jackson prove he deserves a long term contract while he's still under it, fire Edwards, and draft like we've been doing the past 2 years, but make sure THEY can stay healthy as picks.

Pass rush, be it OLB or DE, needs to be the top, A-1 priority this offseason. Draft them, sign free agents, whatever it takes. CB is the second need, but I don't think the corners are as awful as they have looked (except for McKelvin who looks lost) due to the lack of pass rush. Later in the draft and with second tier FA signings they can go after depth at DT and ILB.

As annoyed with Stevie as I was last week, I think the Bills find a way to keep him. I really like Nelson and think he'd be a solid starter opposite Stevie. He catches everything. In free agency or in the middle rounds the Bills need a burner at receiver, Roscoe is gone after this year and Roosevelt, Aiken, et al will have to do for depth in 2012. Depth on OL will be needed, I'm not sure Wood can keep coming back after injuries so C might need to be looked at some. I think the Bills make due with the same TEs they have this year. The backfield will probably remain the same for the most part.

You might be right...Smith has the rest of this season to try to solidify a spot, and he got a start on that today.

Umm as stated above Rayner missed his first attempt as a Bill. In terms of him replacing Lindell. I'm not sure it be the best PR for the front office to run off the best kicker in franchise history for a guy who's shown to be a career temporary replacement.

I don't think Roosevelt or Aiken makes it over Donald Jones. Chan seems to really like him for some reason. Also, I still think Parrish could be a possibility. He's another guy Chan seems to really like.

I don't get the lovefest for A Williams, that he's a locked '12 starter or anything.
He's a high 2nd Round pick, with McGee likely gone and McKelvin showing to be nothing more than a special teamer than A. Williams better be starting next year or else we'll have even more holes to fill. In other words he gets to start by default or until we realize that he was a poor pick and have to replace him in 2015.

I don't think he's a lock and I don't think they'll just hand him the job. He'll have to compete for it, but I expect that he'll win the job eventually. Whether he's totally ready or not, this staff obviously really likes him. Who knows though. Maybe we end up landing Claiborne or Kirkpatrick with our first pick this year.

Update with a couple of changes using a base 43...

Offense and special teams don't change...

QB-Fitzpatrick/DP OR FA/B.Smith (3)
RB-Jackson/Spiller/Choice (3)
FB-McIntyre (1)
WR-Stevie/DP OR FA/Nelson/Roosevelt/Aiken or Easley/(Smith) (5)
TE-Chandler/Caussin/Pianalto (3)
T-Hairston/Pears/DP OR FA/Young (4)
G-Levitre/Urbick/Rhinehart (3)
C-Wood/DP OR FA (2)

K-Lindell (1)
P-Moorman (1)
LS-Sanborn (1)

Now for the defense...

DE-Kelsay/DP or FA/Carrington/Johnson (4)

Edwards becomes an odd-man-out and the need for a true pass rusher on the end of the line is our biggest priority in the off season.

DT-Williams/Dareus/Heard (3)

Tough call going with 3 here, but I don't see the team hanging with more than 7 true linemen and will rely on the flexibility of the Kelsay's and Merriman's to stand up or play with their hand on the ground and shuffle others along the line as they switch out between their 43-34-Nickel sets. Edwards or Troup might stick here and, though, and cost Johnson his roster spot depending on how they perform in camp.

OLB-Barnett/Merriman/DP OR FA/Batten (4)

Merriman won't play in the 43, but will see time in the 34 and Nickel. Kelsay will continue to fill the role of OLB in certain sets, in name only.

ILB-Sheppard/DP OR FA/Moats (3)

Moats may actually stick here for depth, and Barnett will fill the middle in the Nickel.

CB-Williams/Florence/DP OR FA/Rogers/DP OR FA (5)

No change, but McKelvin may stick also as a punt returner.

SS-Wilson/Searcy/Scott (3)
FS-Byrd/DP OR FA (2)

No change in the safeties, and (unfortunately) Scott can play LBer in a pinch.

That's 51 spots, 52 if McKelvin stays and they keep 6 corners, with one spot open for possibly another LBer or D-lineman, maybe a ST gunner/specialist regardless of base position.

...if the by-law regarding roster size isn't changed, considering we have 9 picks in the draft and will probably go after at least three or four UDFA, some of these guys are going to go bye-bye as the rookies sign on to make the 80 player limit.

If they sign Vince Young, Asper or Snow can make the roster as back-up C/G, and either A-Howell or Sukay make the roster as FS or B-Florence or McGee move to b/u FS to prolong their career, they would nail every one of the perceived needs that had to be addressed, with some bonus acquisitions thrown in at key positions.

Not too much to quibble about here, but I will anyway.

IMO

I think that Troup makes it over Heard. Its nice to have a big tackle for goal line and short yardage and Heard certainly is that, but Troup played ahead of him last year with a cracked vertebrae and he is a pretty big body as well. Heard is a less natural 4/3 lineman and does not fit in as well in a rotation.

Johnson vs. Carrington is an interesting choice - they both can play inside and out. They could cut one for more depth at another position.

There is a lot of flexability on the offensive line and there is the possibility they keep only 8. Keeping 9 is very possible. Jasper could be a great short-yardage guy, but it is rare that the #4 guard makes the game-day squad. Its a tough call - you could certainly be right.

Easley is going to have to have a great training camp and pre-season to beat out Hagan. It is possible, but Hagan's experience and his play at the end of the season gives him an edge.

Dickerson could make the team because of special teams ability and what he could bring to the passing game.

My picks, for what they are worth,

Hagan over Easley (keep 5 receivers)

Troup over Heard

Dickerson over Potter.

Things very well could swing that way...Easley and Troup obviously depend on their health, and Dickerson/Potter could come down to one of the final spots and who the staff thinks can be a more effective weapon.

I could see two TE's, especially if they keep Potter as a KOS. 5 DT's maybe, but not six, even if they only keep 4 DE's (which I doubt).

Ed

I hope we only keep 2 TE's. If Onobun is PS eligible I don't see the point in keeping 3 TE's if it means we have to cut a better quality player.

I'm definitely a fan of keeping 6 WR's and those are the six I would keep.

I don't see Brad Smith getting cut. I think Chan really wants to use him in the wildcat more this season. Keeping Thigpen or Young as a 3rd qb seems like kind of a waste of a spot.

I think they'll end up keeping Potter, but I don't know who I would cut to keep him. Maybe Heard from the DT's.

I think I'd rather keep McGee and go with 6 CB's and cut Nesbitt from the safety group. I know Nix said they don't want to move players out of their positions if they have injuries, but if we did have injury problems at safety, I'd rather move Bryan Scott or McGee there.

I really like our depth. It's going to be a lot harder to make cuts this year.

With our Camp Reporter he was basing his opinion mostly off what he saw in camp, our Bills writer however is basing it off what he saw last year, in Week 1 of the preseason and how each player may fit a scheme;
http://www.buffalobillsdraft.com/2012/08/53-man-roster-prediction-eric-samulski/

As the preseason continues on and we finally get to see some players in action, the 2012 Bills come into focus a little more. After weeks of practice, and four arguably meaningless games, we fans get a better sense of the strength and weaknesses of our beloved team. With that in mind, after each preseason game I’m going to take a shot at predicting the 53 man roster using the game action and the weeks worth of practices to inform my decision. Just to clarify, this is not necessarily the 53 man roster that I believe to be the strongest combination of parts, but rather, the 53 man roster that I believe we are most likely to see.

k-oneputt
08-16-2012, 07:41 AM
I'd say that guys 53-man roster is pretty damn close.

I'd go White over Choice.

McGee is still a question due to the injury situation, if healthy though I think he will stay also.
I think Brooks is ahead of Rogers though.

IMO the offense is pretty much set except for the following...Not sure Dickerson is going to make this team anymore. Will they keep 6 WR? Young vs Sanders at OT.
Potter should lock up a ST spot...he's earned it, and they've got room.
Defense-Gilbert vs Heard for the 9th D-lineman. McKillop, a sixth CB, or Howell? Will Carder be a surprise cut? Will a younger guy push McGee off the squad?

I think that you are right on. IMO the only thing that might change is Gilbert getting in over Carrington.

However, there is always some kind of surprise that makes the roster.

Yeah, nobody really knows what goes on behind closed doors at OBD, and what the final factors are for determining the eventual 53.

I could see...

Gilbert or Heard making it over Carrington.
Dickerson not making the team at all.
McKillop making it over Carder or Morrison.
B.Smith getting released (that's a longshot, though, IMO).
Sanders instead of Young at OT.
McGee making the squad if he's anywhere near healthy.

Sucks that Thigpen is going to stick, and if Martin takes a final roster spot it'll be a shame.

Gilbert should make it over Carrington. Another wasted 2010 draft pick who does nothing out there.
Can't see Carder or Sanders getting cut.

Just posted our final projection;
http://www.buffalobillsdraft.com/2012/08/final-53-man-roster-prediction/

Well this is it the final preseason game as been played and its time to focus on what this teams final roster will look like. Our focus in crafting this roster was that we are worried about depth specifically in regards to injuries and how they have plagued us for years now. We put more people into both the offensive and defensive lines than other projections have and because of that some fan favorites got cut. The final cut of this roster was KOS John Potter.

At the bottom we also included our eight man Practice Squad projection as well.

i too would keep gilbert over carrington. the only advantage carrington has is he can play all line positions, at least he has, and that might be enough to keep him on the roster, but he just never seems to distinguish himself against the top two levels of the depth chart. idk if gilbert can play inside at all, which would negate carringtons advantage, but i know ive seen him make more plays overall

i like that yr included dickerson. i would like to include him, too, because hes been very slippery as a pass catcher, a trait i think gailey could exploit. but if they only carry three tes then that leaves them very thin since dickerson isnt much of a blocker. so they have the choice to either carry him as yet another specialty player, very difficult considering they already likely have potter and sanborn as specialists and might have to carry thigpen for a few, or they roll the dice on one of the tes getting hurt and having to have dickerson take over in two te sets where they expect them to block
