Booger Is Ready To Fly - And To Get Paid For It

The skies twinkle with stars on the Bucs defense.
Stars who blazed a trail and won a Super Bowl.

One was on the ground. Watching. Waiting.

``I was on the runway last season,'' Anthony ``Booger'' McFarland said. ``I was ready to take off. First eight games, I played as well as any defensive tackle in the league. But I got halfway down the runway, and the tower calls me back. Got to check my oil. But here I am again.''

Forgotten is the broken forearm that interrupted his best season and the fractured foot that ended it, making him a spectator for the Super Bowl run. Booger McFarland, entering his fifth season, is on the runway, at full throttle and expecting a new contract to match.

    ``Bones heal, man,'' he said.

McFarland sat on the back porch at One Buc Place after a minicamp practice this month. A friend walked by, mentioning dinner at his place. ``Sounds like a plan,'' Booger told Warren Sapp. He resumed talking about the deal he wants. His friend wants one, too.

``It could be awkward,'' Booger said.
