The Bills, who haven't made the playoffs in a league-worst dozen years, look like they've learned nothing in that span and yet again require a total housecleaning. Buffalo needs an aggressive young general manager who wants to make a career reputation for himself. Instead the Bills have had a succession of aging general managers (currently 72-year-old Buddy Nix) who seem content to pick up a few extra years of big paychecks before retiring, and don't mind low-profile losing since they'll never look for another job anyway.

Any suggestions if this were to happen? Is Whaley even in the conversation anymore?

This is pretty obvious. Buddy is a short timer who would never have been considered for a GM job by any other NFL franchise.

The guy we should hire is Eric DeCosta from Baltimore. He's their assistant GM and Director of Pro Player Personnel. Learned under Ozzie Newsome.

I was under the impression that the point of bringing in Whaley was to have a young up and coming successor to Nix who could gain some experience as an assistant GM for a few years.

Teams have tried to sign DeCosta away from Baltimore, and he has decided to stay in Baltimore. He interviewed in Cleveland and Seattle in recent years, but pulled his name out of consideration because he said he didn't want to leave Baltimore. Steve Biscotti, owner of the Ravens, has said that DeCosta will be Ozzie Newsome's eventual successor, although Ozzie is only 55.

Your last point is what is most relevant. You keep trying till he eventually budges. Succession plans don't work in sports.

Whaley just got married and bought a house here.

I'm sure he's been told he's in the long range plans with this team. He trained in Pittsburgh and has been learning the GM job for a couple years. The job is his but can he thrive with beancounter Overdorf meddling in football decision$ ?? ( see Evans, Hangartner ).

It's not whether the GM can do the job, it's whether he's allowed to do the job.

One more thing. The " new, young GM " reference by Easterbrook is without a doubt an endorsement for Whaley.

Gregg Easterbrook grew up in Kenmore and is a die hard Bills fan. His picture hangs in the hall at Kenmore West high school, right next to Wolf Blitzer and a few other famous alumni.

The bolded is a point that cannot be understated. Overdorf and Brandon need to go out of football related decisions in terms of who is on the field or on this roster. That's not what they specialize in or should have much (if any) say in.

They should be fired outright.

Nobody else would want either one of them either.

Dear God, what would we do if the average combined age of the owner, GM and HC were under 75?
