The Bills have put Dave "Sawed-off Shotgun" Rayner on the IR today (http://www.buffalobills.com/news/article-1/Bills-sign-K-Coutu-Rayner-to-I-R/a3240cbd-aa22-4cc1-b9b8-5914db40d2ce). Replacing him is Brandon Coutu signed off the Jaguars practice squad. Couto also kicked for Seattle and the UFL champs Las Vegas Locomotives in 2011.

Rayner must have strained his neck muscles shaking his head after a missed FG.

I don't see how Coutu could be any worse than Rayner.

I actually know this guy. He and I went to HS together, graduated in the same class. He has a huge leg, broke a number of records in HS that Jason Elam set. Also was very good at UGA.

Kicking in particular is a funny business. Lots of turnover, and lots of distrust of the unproven.

He got drafred by Seattle which is a pretty big accomplishment for any specialist. Not sure why he didn't latch on permanently in all honesty. I know he kicked for Las Vegas this past season and they won the UFL title. Also was on the Jags practice squad after that so there is/has been interest in him. He was also brought in for our kick try out when we signed Rayner. Clearly it was down to he or Rayner and they went with Rayner.

You'd think they could just make do with Moorman for just one game.

Seattle had Olindo Mare at kicker when Coutu was drafted & Mare still kicking well but getting up there in age. I think that is why Seattle drafted him but he could not beat out Mare & his experience.

TBN has a write-up on why Gailey did it (http://blogs.buffalonews.com/billboard/2011/12/bills-add-new-pk-for-pats-game.html). He said Rayner was "sore" and wasn't sure he'd be 100%.

You read that right. Soreness is now a season-ending injury. Is it any wonder why I think Chan is abusing the IR system? If I were him... I'd put Rayner on light duty and then have Moorman handle kickoffs like he did his first year here.

Instead, he treats IR as a dumping ground. Ludicrous.

I guess it's because it's the last game and they figured, why not just put him on IR if he can't play....

Geez, Johnny, what's the big friggin' difference that has you so hot and bothered? How does one "abuse" the IR rules? Do you just need something else to whine about?

Correct, in 2008 when he was drafted he actually went 7 for 7 on FG attempts in the preseason and Seattle kept both he and Mare on the 53 man roster. He was inactive the whole year but they were afraid to release him.

He has a cannon for a leg, hit 50+ yard FG's while at UGA including a 58 yarder in 2005. Spent a couple years out of football after the Seahawks cut him in the final round of cuts in 2009. He's had try-outs with both us and Miami and just had a cup of coffee with Jacksonville when they though Scobee was going to miss some time.

What's got me hot and bothered is the fact that this team seems to consistently, year in and year out, rank at or near the top of the NFL in season-ending injuries! How the **** is any NFL team supposed to make any progress toward making the playoffs when its players are constantly inflicting too much pain and damage to be effective players? There is no extensive fountain of NFL players that you can just plug in and act like nothing's changed. Each replacement is a downgrade from the one before it. There's a reason why this team was 5-2 to start the season, and 1-7 since. The fact that Gailey is bringing in his third kicker this season due to "soreness" makes me seriously question the motivation and wisdom behind a lot of these IR decisions. Unless Lindell's in jeopardy of losing his job there is no reason to bring in another kicker just for one game.

I'm just mad at the whole situation-- the continued loss of players, Fred Jackson (and, by extension, the entire Bills franchise) getting screwed out of a Pro Bowl spot, the team's decline, everything that ruined what should have been a long-overdue playoff season that saved the team from leaving Buffalo at the end of the lease in 2012. That's why I'm hot and bothered.

maybe the bills ir'd rayner as a way to cover for Rayner. You cut him at the last game you are telling the world, "he sucks". You IR him, people actually have to look at his two missed FG's and the wild adventure it was makig 3 of the 4 inside 30 yards.

at the end of the day rayner wasn't long for buffalo. you could see that in how unreliable he was. granted it probably takes time to get used to kicking int he ralph, but he didn't get it quickly and that ultimately gets you kicked off a team.

He was pretty good at Georgia right DB? Think he's got a leg for Buffalo AND accurate?

Think so, or at least I hope so. I have no doubt as to his leg strength, the accuracy is really the only question for me.

Gave rayner a shot he failed, let another guy have a game and maybe help him make a team next year...thats why they did this (could be ours)

No, fans criticize anyone who doesn't think the Bills are the greatest team since sliced bread. Anybody who has any shred of sentiment toward this franchise ought to be foaming at the mouth regarding the ridiculous mismanagement of this roster.
