If true ... Not surprised at the sequence, but surprised at timing. Maybe someone is after Whaley and they want to set the motion moving ...

I doubt it.

Never mind I thought he was going to be fired by the title.. Looks like he will step aside which means Doug Whaley is the GM

We all knew Nix wouldn't be here for a long time, and Whaley would take over... Would not have expected this offseason though

I hope this is true because I think Nix is a moron and I think Gailey is either smart or lucky to even get the few wins that he has with the Bills, given the steaming pile of dog crap that Nix gave him to work with.

My first thought was Pat Moran re-named his website so he could bury the shame of the Merriman report.

Then I saw that everything appeared to be spelled correctly and realized it wasn't Pat.

I was talking about this with my brother a few weeks ago. We both were discussing how nice it would be if Whaley would just take over this offseason as opposed to in another year or two.

Comes from Pittsburgh and learned under Kevin Colbert there. Played football at the University of Pittsburgh.

He's a defensive specialist in terms of scouting. Was considered to be heavily involved in the scouting and drafting of Steelers draft picks Woodley, Timmons, and Polamalu.

He's 39 I think so he's a young guy relatively speaking.

Yeah, I think that's the most interesting point they made. I forgot that Gailey was hired before Whaley came on board, so there's really no connection there. This is a critical year for Gailey. I expect him to make a strong push to get Buddy to draft the most NFL-ready players he can. He's not going to want any raw or longer term project type prospects.

I would expect the Bills to be more aggressive in free agency too.

I would expect Gailey to have little say in that department. He's never been considered a good talent evaluator (see his pitiful recruiting at Tech) and Whaley will basically be running the show if Nix is really handing him the keys.

Just a guess but if the article is true and scenario plays out. Its Whaley making the picks and Nix is simply advising and helping him with the set up.

He could just be the guy to lead this team back to respectability, or even success. If, that is, Ralph stays out of the way.

I was going to say, it's odd to me that they would have Nix make all the picks and decisions right before handing things over to Whaley. If he truly is taking over as GM in 2012 then he should be able to pick his own guys going forward then get stuck with a bunch of guys he may not have wanted.

And I don't expect Gailey to necessarily scout players and make decisions, but I think he has a close enough relationship with Nix to influence him a little in leaning towards more pro-ready prospects.

I think that if this report is true then the 2012 draft will basically be a shared power draft, where the two come to some type of consensus on who goes where on the draft board.

I am thrilled if this is true. I actually think Buddy has done OK in his two years, but we need a guy like Whaley (and his eventual coach) running things if we're ever going to make the jump to the next level. We appear to be a Ralph obituary and the revelation of a succession plan away from actually earning our way back to glory...

Well, RECRUITING talent & evaluating talent are two completely different things IMO.

The TALENTED kids in Georga WANT to be Bulldogs, NOT Yellowjackets. And forget about recruting in Fla or Alabama or Tenn to go to Ga Tech. NOBODY that plays in those States & has ANY talent wants to be a Yellowjacket either.

And that's the old catch-22 that we've dealt with 4 times in the last decade. Starting over every couple of years is very difficult, but sticking with guys who will NEVER get the job done, no matter how much time they are given, clearly won't work either.

I'm not necessarily saying that Gailey can't get the job done. In fact, I think he's gotten much better play out of some of the same players as his predecessor. I'm just saying that it's not as simple as sticking with a coach for X number of years so he has time to get it right. There has to be accountability and there has to be a willingness to admit a mistake and start over when necessary.

Thomas as well, recruited three first rounders, Morgan Burnett, he did alright. No QB was his problem, you're not winning **** without one.

I speculated last week that Nix would probably step down after the 12 draft, make the most sense. I'm just glad he **** canned Modrak and overhauled the scouting dept, lots of new blood in there. It was time for a change.

I'd think Nix is in charge of all the scouting, planning, strategy, direction, all year. It makes sense for him make the final decision.

Part of the reason Nix's first draft wasn't as good I think is because he jumped half way in and making the calls, instead of having inputs of people that he trusts.

Love the speculation but I need more than buffalo wins.com. Never heard of this site and looks like a fan blog.

Regardless, my best guess for Gailey is he has to go at least 9-7 next year to keep his job. 8-8 will not be enough.

People needs to understand that FA is not as easy for Buffalo. Except for money, from any other angle, it's just not as attractive. We lived through a few Dockery, TO kind of money-talk deals. It just does not work.

I like what Jimmy Johnson said about team building: draft your team, plug a hole or two through FA. We are not at the stage of having a core team foundation set.

That's a fair statement, but given the pure mediocrity of the total roster the last two years, I'd say he deserves next year. If he can't get to .500 in year 3 (if not better), then I'd say Whaley will have all the ammo he needs to cut him loose and start fresh.

No, in fact that's typical Ralph.

If he does that, when it's time for the up-and-comer to take over, he'll make far less than a seasoned GM and probably less than the guy on our team that he replaces.

And it'll be really typical Ralph if Whaley turns out to suck. Ralph is really good at betting on the wrong horse.

As the Indianapolis Colts rebuild their front office in the wake of the surprising firings of Bills Polian and Chris Polian as President and GM, the names of GM candidates are surfacing.

One of those was Bills Asst. GM/Dir. Player Personnel Doug Whaley, who name was mentioned at the tail end of an Indianapolis Star report Wednesday.

The smart move would be going to Indy. Enthusiastic fanbase, beautiful stadium, Manning AND probably Luck too. The quarterback is key in this sport -without an elite QB, Superbowl hopes are thin to none, and Indy has got one of the best of all time, and likely an awesome future franchise QB for the taking.

What does Buffalo offer in comparison? The Old Man and the Beard??????? What GM would want to be saddled with clearing virtually every football decision with a 94 year old man on a nearly daily basis, according to what Russ Brandon said on WGR the other day.

It's a no brainer - fuggedaboutit. Until Wilson removes himself from football operations, there's no hope for quality front office staff with this franchise.

You draft CJ, Dareus, A. Williams, Sheppard, Hairston, Rogers, White, Troup, Carrington, Moats, Batten... Plus we pick up Barnett, Smith... the list goes on, but his "awful regime" really screwed the pooch on this one since it was a "3 year project."

We were fine after year 1, we kicked ass to start this year off but then the complete, black plague of injuries that happened (and not even the IR players which it the most hilarious part!) and with those talented players we picked up, groomed and were very well coached, we are going to try to snuff yet another regime and say "Well, we gave you three, you kind of failed after two, so we're taking back our word" that whoever is behind Ralph's Oz curtain is pulling the strings.

uhh, did you watch this team?

CJ has had 3, maybe 4 good games in 2 years. Dareus looks decent but not dominant. Williams, Sheppard and Rogers look pretty good. Carrington looks ok. Hairston got benched for Bell when Bell was healthy. Batten, Moats and White have done nothing, Smith was average at best, and Troup looks like a waste of space because he's always hurt and rather mediocre when healthy.

Two years into this regime and the only improvement is 1 game: going from 8 straight losses and 4 wins on the season to 7 straight losses and 5 wins on the season.

Wow, go Nix!

This episode is a rerun and we've seen it before:

Ralph makes a questionable GM hire, who in turn makes questionable coaching hires. They get the team to show slight improvement, before ****ing up and making it painfully obvious that they can't get the job done, so they get fired after 3-4 years.

Rinse, repeat.

This will be our lives as Bills fans until Ralph croaks.

Well, I heard former Buc LB & team leader Hardy Nickerson on the radio the other day. He said NO NFL player really knows whats going on until their 4th year. He said before that they are just getting by on their athleticism.

Dareus looks MUCH BETTER than decent. Williams, Sheppard, Carrington, etc look decent. And that is not taking into account the players like Barnett & Pears that Nix has brought in to fill as many holes as he could.

I can understand Nix stepping aside so the Bills can promote Whaley if they are afraid of losing him, but Nix has been the best GM this team has had in a LONG time. He got rid of dead weight both in the front office & players on the team in a fairly short period of time.

I expect the Bills to look like a GOOD team next year for the first time in a LONG time. Everyone forgets how bad the Bills were being talked about before the year began.

NOBODY expected the Bills to WIN in a blow out against KC the first game. I think most people expected the Bills to be on the losing end of a blow out in KC.

You may think I am overrating most of those players, but you would be wrong. I think 98% of the players on the Bills roster could land a spot on another team at this point if the Bills let them go.

As far as expectations about the 7 losses, I think before the season started the vast majority of people would have thought the Bills would lose those games, except maybe one of the games to Miami. After the Bills suffered all those injuries, I think most people that know football expected them as well.

Looking at that rooster I would bet the Bills are the only team in the history of the NFL having two players each from C. Fla., Northwestern St., and James Madison all at the same time.
Aiken, Troup, Bell, McGee, Moats, and Caussin.
