Numminen is franchise's all-time top defenseman

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- The Phoenix Coyotes agreed Monday to a one-year deal with team captain Teppo Numminen who could have become an unrestricted free agent.

The financial terms of the deal, reached hours before the free-agency deadline, weren't disclosed.

In 15 NHL seasons, 35-year-old Numminen has played in 1,098 games for the franchise, collecting 108-426-534 and 405 penalty minutes.

He has played more games for the team, which was known as the Winnipeg Jets before moving to Phoenix, than any other player in franchise history.

Numminen ranks first all-time among franchise defensemen in goals, assists and points.

"He is our captain; he plays hard every night and is a leader on and off the ice," said Michael Barnett, the team's executive vice president and general manager. "He is the consummate professional who is admired and respected by his teammates."

Only three current NHL players have a longer tenure with their original franchise (Steve Yzerman with Detroit, Ken Daneyko with New Jersey and Brian Leetch with the Rangers, although Leetch is in limbo after New York traded his rights to Edmonton on Monday). Numminen is also a three-time All-Star (2001, 2000, 1999).
