The National Hockey League announced today that it will not move forward with implementation of the Realignment Plan and modified Playoff Format recently approved by the NHL Board of Governors for the 2012-13 NHL season because the NHLPA has refused to provide its consent.

Apparently, the reason the NHLPA gives is increased travel: http://espn.go.com/nhl/story/_/id/7434057/nhl-delays-realignment-plan-modified-playoffs-format

I don't see why it would be much different.

I'm sure Winnipeg is grateful for the union looking out for them.

Sabres player rep agrees with NHLPA stance

Paul Gaustad is the Sabres Player Rep. He said, “For me it was expected. We had a conference call with the P.A. and guys voiced certain opinions and from our stance it was unanimous that we didn’t agree with it so it wasn’t surprising.”

Gaustad revealed that what we’ve heard the past day about what’s wrong with the plan is true, “The biggest issues were the playoff format and the travel. I think it has to be fair for everybody especially in the playoff situation. I think you guys would agree that teams play an entire season for a shot at the playoffs and for one conference to be harder to make the playoffs than another just didn’t sit well with the players.”

So how does this get solved? Gaustad said, “I think there needs to be discussion between the league and the P.A. I think that’s the best way to go about it, both discussing it and finding the best format. There are a lot of scenarios and a lot of detail they need to go over and that’s the best way to solve it
