View Full Version : Jeff Fisher to coach Rams

Indirectly Bills related, as this means he obviously won't be coaching the Dolphins: http://content.usatoday.com/communities/gameon/post/2012/01/foxs-jay-glazer-jeff-fisher-to-coach-st-louis-rams/1

Jeff Fisher, said Fox NFL reporter Jay Glazer Sunday, will be hired to coach the St. Louis Rams. And the former Tennessee Titans coach, said Glazer, will be named in the next 24-48 hours.

That came after NBC's Peter King Saturday said if Fisher "wants to make the most money, he'll go to Miami because Miami owner Stephen Ross will outbid the Rams."

ESPN mentioned earlier today that Fisher is meeting with Sam Bradford and also touring the Rams' training facilities: http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/7438894/jeff-fisher-st-louis-rams-sam-bradford-meeting-sunday-source-says

Putting 1 and 1 together, I have to assume that this means that the Rams will not be targeting a QB in the draft. Wonder if they'll target someone else at #2 or look to trade out of the spot and get more picks.

Interesting note here, too: http://stlouis.sbnation.com/st-louis-rams/2012/1/8/2691992/jeff-fisher-update-los-angeles-move-st-louis-rams-hangup-nfl-2012-head-coach

It appears that the only possible hangup between the St. Louis Rams hiring Jeff Fisher to be their new head coach is the team's possible move to Los Angeles in the near future, according to Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The Rams have long been rumored as a potential option for the city of Los Angeles, which has gone years without an NFL team despite being one of the largest markets in the United States.

The way that reads is, Fisher doesn't want to coach the Rams, if they end up moving to LA... Odd twist, as I figured LA would be more attractive to a Head Coach than St. Louis.

I'll support him if hired, but no thanks to having only four winning seasons in his tenure with the Oilers/Titans.

I'm a bit intrigued with either Cincinnatti's o or d coordinator myself.

Just no to Mularkey, even before this game. An 1 win season was bad, but that hire would challenge my fandom.

Was Fisher the HC when the Oilers left for Tennessee? If so, I can see why that would be a reason. Just checked, and he was, so I can understand why he wouldn't be prepared to go through that sort of crap again.

Very good point, that didn't occur to me, but yes, he was the coach when the Oilers left Houston, as you said.

This is more what I initially thought was the "hangup"...

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/01/08/report-concerns-over-move-to-l-a-could-be-hangup-in-fisher-to-rams-deal/related/

It’s hard to tell whether Thomas is reporting that Fisher actually is concerned that the team will move to L.A., or that the issue has emerged, or could emerge, as a sticking point in negotiations. At the end of the day, it could be that Fisher simply wants his pay to be adjusted if at some point he’ll be coaching not in St. Louis but in a much larger, and thus more challenging and intense, media market.

If that’s what happens, it would be fitting. For any team that moves to L.A., plenty of palms will be extended. Why shouldn’t the head coach have a clause in his contract that pays him more money to account for the fundamental differences between the two cities?

I hope he coaches the Rams, we don't need another tough coach to deal with in the AFC East.

Good God, if we can commit to freakin' Fitz, why would the Rams ever give up on Bradford this soon ??? Fisher SHOULD go there and he'll make good $$.

Dome + good QB + a roster full of good young players from the last couple of drafts... He's got something to work with there.

I thought the Rams-to-LA talk was dead after Kroenke bought the team.

Well, I'm not a Rams fan. I didn't like them when they were in LA & I don't like them now. I hope they WASTE the next 3-4 years waiting for Bradford to develop into something he never will be, a good QB. Like the Bills did with JP & Trent.

The only real question with Bradford is health. He has to stay on the field. He has shown a lot of toughness playing in a difficult situation behind a poor OL. The Rams need to upgrade their OL and he will be fine.

Bradford has the ability to be a top NFL QB, if he can stay healthy.

Wasn't part of the allure of St. Louis that they had a franchise QB in place? They're not dumping Bradford now, I'd guarantee it.

I have seen people say St Louis is the most attractive opening. Sam Bradford, despite his tough year, is one of the most talented young QB's in the NFL. Plus they hold a pick which they will be able to sell for a king's ransom for whoever wants RG3.

Well, I would bet he will follow the MONEY once FA opens up, not McDaniels, but he could still end up a Pat*, they did pay Ocho over $6 Mill this year.

Time will tell, but so far, I have not been impressed with Bradford. I think Yates has looked better in his short time playing, albeit on a much better team.

He was with the same team for 17 years. With as much money as he was making, he probably was more than willing to take a year off. More than likely it was his decision.

They misquoted Glazer. All he said was that'd he very surprised if he didn't go to the Rams but he never reported it as a done deal.

Dunno about Gruden. He came from Arena football to the B'gal, replacing the horrid Bob Bratkowski.

The statements were that he was a WCO guru. To the extent that WCO uses backs for receptions - CIN backs caught 53 in total. 3rd down specialist Brian Leonard did miss 3 games, and TE Jermaine missed two.

Losing 2nd year slot receiver Jordan Shipley in game #2 certainly hurt - all things looked good following his pleasing 53 reception rookie season. Rookie AJ Green performed, but while wr Jerome Simpson is highly talented, he's not the brightest wr out there - which is a detriment in any offensive scheme, and particularly so in a WCO.

Dalton helped - he was an unknown to defenses, and does use his mobility well.

Gruden rode a wave of early success - close games - but as the season wore on, his calls became quite predictable, especially in short-yardage and red zone situations. It was Bratkowski all over again IMO.

It's moot now; he signed a 3 year contract - yet another assimilated into owner Brown's "Borg Collective."

Brown almost never eats staff contracts. He values loyalty and preservation of his profits beyond team performance. Sad.

I just saw something on KFFL that says Gregg Williams is expected to join Fisher in St. Louis as DC.
Why would Gregg leave N.O., is he that close to Fisher and if he is, why didn't he rejoin him sooner?

My guess would be, after GW left, Fisher had a DC in place until he left TEN...

With Fisher taking over in StL, my guess would be that Fisher will be allowed to bring in his own staff, which means the DC slot would be Fisher's to fill with who he chooses.

Personally, though, I dont understand why GW would leave the Saints job, unless he would get an "Assistant Head Coach" title with the role, which would make it a promotion.

Yes, Williams & Fisher are very close. He did not have an opportunity to rejoin Fisher until now after he left for Buffalo. Williams contract expires at the end of this year, so he is now free to join Fisher & Fisher has a spot for him on his staff.

Williams may get that title, but also he & Fisher are GOOD friends & if he can improve the Rams defense, he may have another shot at HC.
