    Goodell receives five-year contract extension

More than a month ago, the NFL Players Association rewarded executive director DeMaurice Smith with a $1 million bonus for his role in helping the players come to terms on a new collective bargaining agreement that kept them from being locked out for the 2011 NFL season.

Now the man responsible for that deal getting done on the league and owners' side—commissioner Roger Goodell—is getting a different kind of bonus. Daniel Kaplan, of Sporting News sister publication Sports Business Journal, reports the NFL has given Goodell a five-year contract extension that will keep him in his post through March 2019. His previous contract was set to expire in two years.

Great. Pretty soon the qb will have a flag on each side of his hips for the games and looking at him too long will get you ejected and fined.

At least Goodell is a WNYer. While he can't control the Bills' destiny, he's Bills-friendly, and I'd rather have him in the Commissioner's seat than an LA guy.
Should have known, way back in 1960 when we drafted Richie Lucas Number 1, that this would be a long, hard ride. But who could have known it would be THIS bad?

We'll see how 'Bills-friendly' he really is eventually.

He certainly can't save the franchise if Ralph decides that his estate will sell to the highest bidder, and that bidder gets the votes to move. But short of such a cut and dried scenario, he may be able to imperceptively move certain things our way. I definitely prefer a native son in the Commish's office.

While the rule changes have been annoying at least there was a season this year and for the next nine years minimum.

What a surprise. The NFL hasn't fired a commissioner since Elmer "One of the Four Horsemen" Layden in 1946. And that was only because he let the AAFC get off the ground.

With the UFL dead and buried, the Evil Empire ever-so-slowly creeping into Canada and England, a hugely successful TV monopoly, and no blood lost over the lockout, Goodell will be there as long as he wants.

Goodell gets a bad rap. People like to just blindly blame him for everything they don't like about the NFL.
