    Kelvin Sheppard

Penned in as a starter next year at 4-3 MLB. Thoughts on his past year and drafted potential?

He wasn't bad but I wasn't as impressed as some. The transition may slow his development some.

I'm a big fan. I know he left plenty to be desired at times, but considering the shortened off-season and the fact that he was injured for most of it, really limited his chance to develop more. I think the bad angles and hesitation at times will only improve with experience. It sounds like he's a pretty smart player. I like his size and athletic ability, and he seems to play with some aggressive intensity too.

I prefer him as an ILB in a 3-4 where his lack of speed wouldn't be as exploited as much as long as we had a true NT to protect him.

Well he should be more comfortable back in a 4-3.

Well now he has 4 DL in front of him. Not only that directly in front of him will be Dareus and Williams. He should be fine. Him and Barnett blitzing with Dareus and Kyle in the middle will be hard to stop

I expect him to become an average starter, nothing more.

Really like him better in a 34 because it protects him. He's not a down hill LB and he struggled at LSU with traffic. He can play the position and I think he has enough range but we don't need another poz where its 4 yards and then a tackle. We need to destroy holes and make hits in the backfield.

Really sucks we had to lose him over the 3-4 switch that didn't last. He was playing as good as anyone in that spot when they were 4-3 before.

Poz posted nice numbers for yards allowed per tackle out of the 4-3. Well ahead of much more recognized players. Wish I still had that link. Especially absurd because most of his reads were pass-run in the Tampa 2.

I still found Poz to be very slow footed...

but at the amount he was paid he wasn't worth it.

Sheppard will be a mystery. Lets see what he has after a full NFL offseason regimen and training camp... plus a years experience.

Still no reason to not take any LB if the right one falls to us

I like Kelvin a lot. He has a way to go in pass coverage, bit of an understatement really, but as a downhill run force I think he can be excellent. Blew up several runs last year, but like Draftboy said, you better keep him clean. Like him better in a 3-4 than a 4-3, would be able to just concentrate on the run in that scheme.
