Bills and Stevie exchange contract numbers

The Buffalo Bills and representatives for Stevie Johnson have exchanged proposals and are expected to meet at next week’s NFL Combine, a league source told The Buffalo News.

The Bills submitted a proposal over a week ago and Johnson’s agent, C.J. LeBoy, countered the team’s offer on Monday, according to the source. There have been no further talks although the two sides are scheduled to meet next week in Indianapolis.

The 25-year-old Johnson started all 16 games in 2011 and finished with 76 receptions for 1,004 yards and seven touchdowns.

good news and they will meet up next week

As with most deals, the combine is the best time to do them because other teams are around to (not) tamper and you can hash it out with real numbers the agent is hearing from birdies.

Well exchanging numbers and talking is at least better than not talking. So it's a start.

That's encouraging news. While I've never viewed Stevie as a true number 1, he is a capable receiver and a good number 2. Plus, I really don't want to see us create another hole, when we already have so many other big ones to fill.

Should have known, way back in 1960 when we drafted Richie Lucas Number 1, that this would be a long, hard ride. But who could have known it would be THIS bad?

I think Stevie has all the capabilities to be a number 1, he just needs to get his head on straight. If he can eliminate his inopportune dropsies, he'd be a top WR in the league, IMO.

Agent: "We are looking for 10 a year."
              Nix: "We were thinking 6.5"
Agent: "Hahahahahahahaha thanks anyway. Maybe you should call Baltimore- I hear they're willing to let Lee Evans go."

Hopefully they can just meet in the middle.

that's always the goal, but sometimes the team lowballs and/or the player/agent overvalue themselves and ask for too much, and meeting in the middle would require both sides giving up too much (at least in their opinions).

There was a previous report that Stevie wanted $7 or $7.5 a year, but I don't think that's true because if it was, this would have been done a long time ago.

Stevie is a solid number one right now - he's got back to back 1,000 yard seasons on crappy teams that have had crappy protections and limited weapons around him, and a defense that can't get off the field. he's worth some cash.

The dropped balls at key times - this one, the TD pass against the Steelers, and several others - are the reason I can't see Stevie as a real number 1. I'm not bashing him, and I want him to stay. I'm just saying I'd like us to get a faster guy with better hands (or concentration) to be our number 1, and let Stevie be a very good number 2.

Stevie would be better as a 1B.

                          Stevie as 1A
                          FA as 1B

                          This would be ideal!

The stupid penalties and dropped game-winning passes are going to be an opportunity cost for him.
