Was it worth it? This is a question that Colts fans will have to answer after the next season is over about drafting Luck & letting Manning walk for NOTHING.
The Rams are said to be asking for as much as three #1 draft picks for the 2nd pick in the draft. Imagine how much the Colts could get for the 1st pick if they traded it & kept Manning.
The Colts have grown OLD & are in decline. Even if Luck proves to be the next Manning, that entire team needs to be rebuilt. It could be YEARS before that city sees a winning team again.
On the other hand, if the Colts kept Manning & he were even 75% of his former self imagine how much the trade of the 1st pick in the draft could do to rebuild that team.
Worst case for the Colts & their fans is Luck being a bust while Peyton has another good three or four years in him & the Colts draft Luck. On the other hand even if Peyton did not have any more magic left, at least the Colts could have rebuilt the team by trading the #1 pick.
